About Port Vila, Vanuatu

4.5 (20 reviews)
Port Vila is the charming capital of Vanuatu and sits right on the edge of shimmering Mele Bay. Known for its stunning harbor views and lush tropical surroundings, the city is often the first stop for visitors eager to experience the best of Vanuatu’s island life. Port Vila is welcoming but manages to retain a distinctly laid-back, small-town atmosphere despite being Vanuatu’s busiest hub.

The city’s center is a mix of bustling markets, cafes, and waterfront restaurants where you can sample everything from traditional lap lap to French pastries. Key attractions include the lively Port Vila Market, perfect for picking up fresh produce and handicrafts. History fans can explore the National Museum of Vanuatu or visit remnants from WWII scattered around Efate Island. Don’t miss the chance to snorkel at the nearby Mele Cascades or cruise off Iririki Island just minutes from town.

Life in Port Vila is relaxed yet vibrant. Locals are friendly and quick to share stories about their home, and there’s a noticeable blend of Melanesian traditions alongside French and British colonial influences. Evenings often mean watching local musicians perform by the waterfront or catching a cultural show. If you're after more adventure, island hopping, diving in crystal-clear reefs, and hiking lush rainforests are all within easy reach.

Getting around is straightforward, with minibuses running frequent routes and taxis available at most hotels and central spots. Accommodation ranges from budget guesthouses to upscale boutique resorts perched above the bay. Dining is varied, with street food stalls, seafood grills, and fine dining all represented. While you’ll find ATMs, cash remains king at smaller vendors and markets, so carry some vatu with you.

The dry season from May to October is the best time to visit, offering cooler temperatures and fewer rain showers. Saturdays bring extra energy with expanded market stalls and bustling waterfront activity. If you want fewer crowds, aim for ‘shoulder’ months like April and November. Port Vila’s tropical charm, welcoming people, and wealth of accessible adventures make it a compelling base for exploring Vanuatu.

General Advice

Port Vila is generally easy to navigate, with many attractions accessible by short taxi or minibus rides. Most locals speak English, Bislama, and sometimes French, making communication straightforward. The city is friendly to solo travelers, couples, and families, but it’s always wise to check weather patterns and local events before booking, as some tours and activities are seasonal. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable walking shoes, as day trips often involve a mix of city and nature settings. Respect local customs, especially when visiting villages or cultural sites—dressing modestly is appreciated.

Security & Safety

Port Vila is considered safe for tourists, with low levels of violent crime, but petty theft does occur. Always keep valuables secure in your accommodation and avoid leaving bags unattended at the markets or beach areas. When using taxis or minibuses, agree on prices in advance or insist the meter is used to avoid misunderstandings. Be mindful on wet roads or near waterfalls, as paths can be slippery after rain. Always drink bottled or filtered water, especially if you have a sensitive stomach, as tap water can vary in quality.

Travel Tips

  • Carry enough local currency (vatu) for markets and taxis.
  • Pack light, breathable clothing along with swimwear and a light rain jacket.
  • Minibuses with “B” on license plates are the cheapest way to get around town.
  • Tap water quality can vary—stick to bottled or filtered water.
  • Book popular tours (like Mele Cascades trips) ahead during peak season.
  • Many shops close early, especially on Sundays and holidays.
  • Reef shoes are handy for beach and water activities.
  • Electricity is 230V, so bring the right adapter if needed.

Our week in Port Vila was so peaceful. Loved going to the markets every morning for breakfast fruit. The Mele Cascades were gorgeous, but go early—by noon it gets crowded. Would totally return for the food and relaxed vibe.

Snorkeling at Hideaway Island was the absolute highlight for me. The underwater post office is such a quirky idea, and the staff were super helpful. Town felt completely safe, even when I was exploring at night.

Loved the energy downtown but the humidity was intense when we visited! Iririki Island is a nice spot for lunch and views. Wish more shops stayed open past 6pm.

Great spot for families. Our kids had a blast swimming at the resort pool and the nearby waterfalls. Took a local minibus to Ekasup Village, which was both fun and educational.

Did the ziplining adventure through the rainforest—such a thrill! Food wise, you get the best of both worlds: fresh fish at beach grills and delicious croissants from French bakeries. Locals were so warm and welcoming.

Caught some rain during my stay, but still enjoyed wandering the waterfront and trying street food. Only downside is some of the taxis overcharged, so be careful. Still, had a very chill time overall.

Port Vila is perfect for slow days and sunset drinks by the water. I visited the National Museum and learned a lot about Vanuatu’s history. The market’s handicrafts were beautiful—for gifts, it’s a must-stop!

We went diving off Hideaway Island and saw a surprising amount of marine life. Took a sunset cruise our last night—absolutely worth it. Plan meals around market times or risk missing out on fresh seafood.

I loved the local music and cultural shows right in the city center. There’s a unique blend of influences you don’t see many other places. Wish there were more vegetarian options at some of the casual restaurants.

Easy city to get around, and buses are cheap. Favorite moment was mailing a postcard underwater for my daughter. The only thing—bring extra bug spray, especially on rainforest walks.

Port Vila is a true escape—loved the pace of life and friendliness of everyone. Found some excellent local art and tried kava for the first time. Bring cash, as most small vendors don’t take cards.

Sunset views from the Feiawa Seaside Walk are spectacular. We found taxis convenient, though a couple of drivers quoted steep fees before negotiation. Food is pricey but always fresh.

We explored both the main town and nearby villages. Cultural show at Ekasup was fascinating and not at all touristy. A bit warm and rainy, but otherwise everything was perfect for families.

The port area gets busy when cruise ships are in, so plan your sightseeing early. Tried kayaking in the bay, which was fun but not much shade. City sights are best covered on foot.
