About Christchurch, New Zealand

4.4 (20 reviews)
Christchurch, New Zealand’s largest city on the South Island, is often called the Garden City thanks to its abundance of parks, tree-lined avenues, and breathtaking botanical displays. With its mix of old-English charm and bold modern architecture, Christchurch stands out as a dynamic urban destination that has gracefully rebuilt and reinvented itself following the 2011 earthquake. The Avon River weaves through the city’s heart, offering scenes of punting boats and grassy riverbanks where locals gather and relax.

Visitors to Christchurch will find plenty to explore, from the vibrant Riverside Market brimming with local food stalls and crafts, to the serene Christchurch Botanic Gardens—a favorite picnic spot for families and couples alike. The city’s striking cardboard Transitional Cathedral, bold street art, and museums like Canterbury Museum and Quake City reveal Christchurch’s creative and resilient spirit. Just outside city limits, the Port Hills provide excellent hiking and panoramic views, while day trips to the French-influenced town of Akaroa or adrenaline sports in the Southern Alps appeal to adventure seekers.

Culture is woven deeply into the local experience, with contemporary galleries, artisanal dining, and a year-round calendar of festivals. Christchurch’s café culture thrives, and its public spaces buzz with food trucks, musicians, and weekend markets. The post-quake city landscape features innovative public art and design, making even a simple stroll a visual treat. Whether joining locals for a night out on Victoria Street or cycling along one of the city’s greenways, visitors get an authentic taste of Kiwi urban life.

Navigating Christchurch is easy, thanks to a user-friendly tram system, walkable downtown, and extensive bike lanes. Accommodation ranges from chic boutique hotels to cozy B&Bs in leafy suburbs. Dining is diverse, with everything from high-end restaurants to street food celebrating New Zealand’s fresh local produce.

Spring (September to November) is an especially lovely time to visit Christchurch as the gardens burst into color, but every season brings something special. For fewer crowds, consider the shoulder months of March-April or October-November. Remember to pack for unpredictable weather and prepare for an active, outdoorsy pace.

General Advice

Christchurch is a fantastic launching point for exploring the South Island, but the city itself rewards a few days of exploration. Plan on comfortable walking shoes as much of the city is best experienced on foot. Take time to chat with locals—their pride in the city’s renewal is infectious, and they have great tips on what’s new. Try to include both outdoor adventures and urban experiences to appreciate the city’s unique balance.

Security & Safety

Christchurch is generally very safe with a relaxed atmosphere. However, keep an eye on personal belongings in busy public areas and city parks, especially during festivals and weekends. Be cautious when cycling in city traffic and watch for rapidly changing weather conditions when hiking in the hills. Standard urban safety measures apply as in any mid-sized city.

Travel Tips

  • Purchase a Metrocard for discounts on public transport.
  • Book popular activities—like punting on the Avon River—in advance during peak seasons.
  • Dress in layers, as Christchurch weather can change quickly even in summer.
  • Rent a bike for easy and scenic city exploration.
  • Visit in spring for the best garden blooms and fewer crowds.
  • Don’t skip the suburbs—places like Sumner offer great beaches and local cafés.
  • Try local specialties at Riverside Market for affordable meals.
  • Allow an extra day for side trips to Akaroa or Arthur’s Pass.

We spent four days exploring Christchurch and absolutely loved the gardens and markets. The Riverside Market food stalls were a hit with our teens. Some construction was still happening in the city center but it didn’t detract from our experience.

The Botanic Gardens are even better than the photos. I enjoyed how easy it was to walk everywhere and find cool little cafés. Public transport to the airport could be better, but the tram system is a fun way to get around.

Christchurch was our first stop in New Zealand and it set the bar high. We spent hours at the Canterbury Museum and took a day trip to the Port Hills for amazing views. Wish we had more time to spend in the parks.

Our family of five had a great time—lots for the kids to do, especially at the Margaret Mahy Playground. We also biked along the Avon River, which was so peaceful. Would definitely recommend for families!

I was surprised by how vibrant and artsy Christchurch is. The street murals and quirky pop-up installations made walking the city really fun. Some downtown streets are still under repair, but the energy is infectious.

Quake City was a highlight for me—such an insightful look at what the city has been through. Punting on the river was relaxing if a bit touristy. Would suggest renting bikes to cover more ground.

Visited during winter so it was a bit cold and some attractions closed early. Still enjoyed the city’s cafés and tried some great seafood. Next time I’ll come in spring for the flowers.

Came over the holidays and just loved the festive atmosphere. The night markets and Christmas lights in Victoria Square were magical. Our hotel in the city center put us close to everything.

Travelling solo, I felt really safe walking around Christchurch. The food scene is diverse, and there were plenty of vegetarian options. A bit quiet at night but I enjoyed the relaxed pace.

Spent a long weekend here. The Port Hills hike was fantastic, and so was the Canterbury Museum. Prices can be a little high at restaurants, but good value if you look for local spots.

Highlight was definitely the punting trip on the Avon. My partner and I enjoyed exploring street art and sculpture trails. Would love a more buzzing nightlife, but that’s just not what the city is about.

Best part for me was the bike trails and parks. The main square felt a little commercial but overall it was a nice break from bigger cities. Definitely relaxing.

Rainy weather cut down on the outdoor stuff we planned. Spent more time in museums and cafés, which were cozy. City center is compact but sometimes felt too quiet in the evenings.

Christchurch is super walkable and the locals are genuinely friendly. We lucked out with a warm, sunny week and caught a free music festival in the park. Would come back in a heartbeat.

The spring flowers in the Botanic Gardens were gorgeous. Our kids loved the playgrounds, and we found Christchurch to be very family-friendly overall. Next time we’ll plan more trips out to the countryside.
