About Auckland, New Zealand

4.4 (20 reviews)
Auckland, New Zealand’s largest city, stretches across a striking landscape of volcanic hills, lush greenery, and two sparkling harbors. Known as the 'City of Sails,' Auckland brings together a dynamic mix of cosmopolitan vitality and laid-back, waterside living. Its unique setting means you can enjoy urban delights one moment and escape to beaches or hiking trails the next.

The city is rich in things to do: climb the iconic Sky Tower for panoramic views, wander through the buzzing eateries of Viaduct Harbour, or hop on a ferry to the volcanic island of Rangitoto for an afternoon of adventure. Auckland Art Gallery, the Auckland War Memorial Museum, and the lively waterfront are just a few places that showcase both the Maori and contemporary culture embedded in the city’s spirit. From the designer boutiques of Ponsonby to the white-sand beaches at Mission Bay, there’s plenty for all tastes and ages.

A visit to Auckland means experiencing a warm, multicultural atmosphere. Cafés serve up world-class coffee, bustling markets showcase local artwork, and music spills from open-air bars on Fridays. The city’s Maori heritage is reflected in public art, events, and even in the landscape, making for an enriching and inviting experience.

Getting around is easy with an efficient public transport network of trains, buses, and ferries. Accommodation styles range from luxury harborside hotels to quirky inner-city apartments and family-friendly hostels. Dining is a highlight, with seafood, Asian fusion, and local New Zealand flavors stealing the show—don’t miss trying fresh oysters or a craft beer Flight.

The best times to visit are during the New Zealand summer months of December to March, when the weather is ideal for outdoor adventures, beach days, and festivals. Layer up even in summer, as breezes off the Tasman Sea can be cool. No matter the season, Auckland surprises with its blend of outdoor fun and city excitement.

Great spot for families—my kids adored Kelly Tarlton’s Aquarium and the open green space at Auckland Domain. Renting a car for a day trip to Devonport was worth it. City gets busy during events, so book restaurants early.

Auckland is super walkable, especially around the harbor. Local food surprised me with so many options, especially Asian-inspired dishes. Some shops closed earlier than expected, but overall I enjoyed every minute.

Auckland’s parks and green spaces are a real highlight. Lots of friendly locals happy to give advice. Only downside was some rain, but still managed to enjoy everything by ducking into the art galleries.

Perfect balance of outdoor action and big city amenities. Caught a rugby game at Eden Park which was unforgettable! Could’ve done without the traffic downtown during rush hour, but otherwise outstanding.

Spent time browsing shops in Newmarket and eating dumplings in the city center. Public transport made it easy to see a lot with limited time. Some construction in the city but that’s normal for a growing place.
