About Savusavu, Fiji

4.4 (20 reviews)
Savusavu, often called Fiji’s “Hidden Paradise,” is a charming coastal town on the southern coast of Vanua Levu. Known for its naturally heated hot springs and a scenic harbor filled with yachts, Savusavu draws travelers looking for an off-the-beaten-path South Pacific experience. The laid-back vibe, combined with abundant natural beauty and friendly locals, makes this destination feel welcoming and authentic from the moment you arrive.

The area is a playground for lovers of water sports, with some of Fiji’s top scuba diving sites nearby, including the famous Namena Marine Reserve. Visitors can also enjoy snorkeling right off the shore, sailing, paddleboarding, and fishing. On land, lush forests filled with rare orchids and birdlife surround the town, while bubbling geothermal springs offer a unique spot for relaxation. Daku Bay and Savusavu Market provide opportunities to experience local flavors, crafts, and island life up close.

Savusavu’s atmosphere is relaxed, unhurried, and distinctly Fijian. The main street is lined with colorful shops, cafes, and open markets, giving a glimpse into day-to-day life. Locals are quick with a smile, and it’s easy to strike up a conversation or learn about traditional customs. Many small resorts and guesthouses prioritize sustainability and connect visitors with the community, highlighting Fijian music, dance, and cuisine.

Getting around Savusavu is simple, as the town is compact and walkable. Taxis are readily available and affordable for excursions outside the main area. Accommodations range from boutique resorts perched above the bay to waterfront villas and cozy homestays. Seafood and tropical produce star on most menus, and it’s worth trying kokoda (Fijian ceviche) or sampling dishes at the food stalls near the market.

The best time to visit Savusavu is from May to October, when the weather is dry and mild. Expect more rain in the hot, humid months between November and April, but underwater visibility remains excellent year-round. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, and don’t forget your snorkel mask for spontaneous swims. Many travelers end up staying longer than they planned, captivated by the town’s easygoing charm.

General Advice

Savusavu is an ideal place to unplug and enjoy the simple pleasures of island life, but it offers enough activities to keep even adventurous travelers engaged. Most locals speak English, and you’ll find that the pace is much slower than Fiji’s more tourist-heavy destinations. Cash is recommended for markets and small shops, though ATMs are available in town. Take the time to greet people with a friendly 'Bula!' and immerse yourself in local customs for a rewarding visit.

Security & Safety

Savusavu is generally very safe and welcoming for tourists. Usual common-sense precautions apply: keep valuables secure, lock your accommodation, and avoid walking alone at night in unfamiliar areas. Watch for strong currents when swimming, and use reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the marine environment. Mosquito repellent is advisable, especially if exploring forests or mangrove areas.

Travel Tips

  • Pack light, breathable clothing and a rain jacket for unexpected showers.
  • Bring cash for small purchases, as not all shops accept cards.
  • Book diving and tours ahead of time, especially in peak months.
  • Use bottled water if you’re sensitive to changes in water sources.
  • Try local produce and seafood at the market for fresh, flavorful meals.
  • Respect local customs and always ask before taking photos of people.
  • Consider renting a bike or scooter for easy exploration beyond town.
  • Tipping isn’t mandatory but is appreciated for excellent service.

We couldn't get enough of the snorkeling just off the coast—the reefs were vibrant and we saw so many tropical fish. The town itself is super chill with friendly locals at every corner. My partner especially loved the hot springs near the waterfront. Definitely slower-paced than the mainland but that was exactly what we wanted.

Savusavu exceeded all our expectations. The diving was world-class—Namena Reserve had some of the best coral I've ever seen. We also took a tour of the pearl farm, and it was fascinating to see how they grow and harvest the pearls. Can't wait to come back.

Loved the natural beauty and the relaxed island feel, though there were a couple of rainy afternoons. The food from the market was fresh and delicious, and we found a cozy guesthouse with an amazing view of the bay. It's not the most 'happening' place but perfect for recharging.

As a solo traveler, I felt really safe here and made friends at the local café. Renting a scooter made it easy to visit waterfalls and explore rainforest trails. My only wish is there was a bit more nightlife, but sunsets by the marina more than made up for it.

We came for the diving, but ended up spending hours at Savusavu Market chatting with locals and tasting street snacks. The mix of Fijian and Indo-Fijian cuisine was a highlight. Would recommend checking out the Waisali Rainforest Reserve for nature lovers.

If you're looking for tranquility, Savusavu is amazing. Our villa had views straight onto the bay and the mornings were so quiet you only hear birdsong. The kids loved the hot spring mud pools, and we all tried paddleboarding for the first time.

Great destination for couples. We did a sunset cruise on our last night that was absolutely magical. I would suggest packing plenty of mosquito repellent if you're planning to hike or go into the rainforest—noticed quite a few!

The town is charming and very slow-paced, maybe too much so if you're looking for nightlife or lots of activity. The diving is unbeatable, though, and the local seafood is out of this world. Some roads are rough outside town, so plan for extra travel time.

Great diving, beautiful natural setting, and very relaxed vibes. We found a wonderful eco-resort that put on a traditional Fijian music night. Sometimes things move a little slowly with service, but that's part of island life.

Our family had an incredible week—kids splashed at the hot springs and we all kayaked around the bay. The local markets had such a good energy each morning. Wish we could have stayed longer!

Such a peaceful spot after spending time in Nadi. The gardens around our lodge were bursting with orchids and birds. Don't skip the waterfall tour—worth it even if there's a little rain.

Savusavu is not super touristy, which we appreciated, but it can be tough to get around if you don't arrange taxis early for your tours. We loved learning about indigenous Fijian culture at our homestay.

We celebrated our anniversary in Savusavu and it was perfect—quiet beaches, candlelit dinners by the water, and spa treatments surrounded by forest. Bring some patience for the slow internet, but honestly, disconnecting was good for us.

Great spot for nature and relaxation. We hiked in the Waisali Rainforest one day and spent the next day just lounging by the water. Not a place for shopping, but perfect for unwinding.

Spent most days diving and saw more species of fish than anywhere else in the Pacific. Savusavu has a great mix of adventure and downtime. Beautiful sunsets every night from our balcony.

Loved touring the pearl farm and learning how pearls are cultivated. The resort staff were so kind and went out of their way to make our trip special. Town is tiny but that gives it an authentic charm.

We visited during the wet season, so got some downpours, but it was still warm and the landscape was incredibly lush. Don't miss out on trying kokoda and fresh papaya from the market. Bring shoes you don’t mind getting muddy!
