Newcastle felt like the perfect mix of city comfort and surf town vibes. We loved our daily walks from our hotel to Merewether Beach for morning coffee by the ocean. The historic Fort Scratchley was a highlight for my partner, but some of the smaller museums were surprisingly good too.

I’m a surfer and Newcastle’s waves were incredible—especially at Bar Beach and Dixon Park. The city center is super chill and I enjoyed trying out different craft beer bars on Darby Street. Early mornings at Nobbys are unbeatable.

The beaches are just fantastic for families. My 8-year-old loved the rockpools at Newcastle Beach, and we lucked out with dolphin spotting just up the coast. Some places require a bit of a uphill walk, but mostly stroller-friendly.

We did a Hunter Valley tour from Newcastle and the scenery was so pretty in early spring. Back in the city, we found awesome vegan options and everyone was really welcoming. If you’re into photography, sunset from the breakwall is gorgeous.

Loved the sense of history at Fort Scratchley, especially during the cannon firing demonstration. Shopping and people-watching on Darby Street made for a fun afternoon. Would suggest packing a jumper if you’re riding the coastal wind.

The Newcastle Art Gallery surprised me with its collection. My favorite moments were sitting on Nobbys Beach and watching surfers. The city feels very clean and friendly compared to bigger urban areas in Australia.

We rode bikes up to the ANZAC Memorial Walk and it was worth every effort for the view. Kids had a ball feeding birds at Blackbutt Reserve. Some attractions close early (especially cafes), so double-check hours before you go.
