About Kangaroo Island, Australia

4.5 (20 reviews)
Kangaroo Island, Australia’s third-largest island, is a haven for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone yearning for unspoiled landscapes. Renowned for its rugged cliffs, pristine beaches, remarkable wildlife, and timeless coastal charm, the island is just a short ferry ride from South Australia’s mainland but feels like a different world. Its isolated setting has preserved native species and dramatic scenery, making it a favorite for travelers seeking genuine Australian wilderness.

One of the main draws is the awe-inspiring wildlife encounters. You’re likely to spot kangaroos, koalas, echidnas, and—at Seal Bay—hundreds of wild Australian sea lions lounging on sandy shores. The surreal rock formations of Remarkable Rocks and Admiral’s Arch in Flinders Chase National Park are must-sees, while the white sands and turquoise waters at Vivonne Bay invite swimming, sunbathing, and picnicking. Adventure activities like sandboarding at Little Sahara and hiking through native bushland are plentiful, offering unforgettable outdoor experiences.

Life on Kangaroo Island is charmingly laid-back, with little towns like Penneshaw, Kingscote, and American River offering friendly vibes and local flavors. Local produce takes center stage; indulge in honey, fresh oysters, artisanal cheeses, and wines at farm gates and cellar doors scattered across the island. Accommodations range from seaside cabins and cozy boutiques to luxurious eco-retreats that blend seamlessly with the landscape, ensuring everyone finds their fit.

Getting around is easiest by car, as public transport is limited and sites are spread out. Dining options celebrate the island’s seafood and organic produce—don’t miss an oyster tasting or bush honey ice cream. Ferry rides to the island can book up in peak season, so plan ahead. The small population and minimal crowds—even in summer—mean you’ll rarely share beaches or bushwalks, creating a sense of solitude not often found elsewhere.

Spring and autumn are particularly pleasant, with mild temperatures and abundant wildlife activity, but even winter has its draw with wild coastlines and stormy seas perfect for photography. Prepare for wind and variable weather, and bring binoculars if you’re keen on birdwatching. Allow plenty of time to explore—the island’s relaxed rhythm rewards those who linger.

General Advice

Book accommodation and ferry tickets in advance, especially during Australian school holidays and summer. Hiring a car is highly recommended, as public transport is very limited and many attractions are spread far apart. Prepare for changing weather by packing layers and bringing sun protection, insect repellent, and sturdy shoes for walking. Give yourself at least three days to take in the highlights and savor the tranquil pace; the island is larger than most expect and travel time between sites adds up.

Security & Safety

Kangaroo Island is generally very safe and crime rates are low, but always lock your accommodation and vehicle, especially at night. Roadside wildlife can pose hazards—drive carefully, especially at dawn, dusk, and during the night when animals are most active. Carry water and ensure your car has enough fuel, as services between towns can be sparse. If hiking or heading into remote areas, let someone know your plans and check for any park closures or fire warnings.

Travel Tips

  • Renting a car is the best way to explore the island and reach hidden beaches or parks at your own pace.
  • Pack for all weather—sun, wind, and rain can occur in a single day.
  • Bring cash for smaller shops or farm gates, as some may not accept cards.
  • Mobile signal can be patchy in remote areas; download maps in advance.
  • Drive slowly and keep an eye out for wildlife, particularly at night.
  • Try local seafood, Ligurian honey, and wines at farm gates and cellar doors.
  • Plan fuel stops, as gas stations are limited outside the main towns.
  • Respect all signage for conservation areas and don’t disturb wildlife.

Our family had an amazing week on Kangaroo Island. The kids loved seeing wild kangaroos and the sea lions at Seal Bay. Rental cars get booked out quickly, so I'm glad we reserved in advance. Some of the towns are pretty small, but that was part of the charm for us.

Absolutely loved the peaceful atmosphere and the wildlife everywhere—you really feel close to nature. Flinders Chase National Park blew me away with its scenery. The local oysters are addictive! I could have stayed much longer.

We did a road trip around the whole island and every beach was prettier than the last. Vivonne Bay was my favorite spot to relax. Wish there were more vegetarian options at restaurants, though. If you’re into wildlife, you will not be disappointed.

Remarkable Rocks lived up to the name! The hike to Admiral’s Arch was windy but worth it for the views. Our eco-lodge was so peaceful. Driving after dark was a bit stressful because of all the wildlife on the roads.

As a photographer, Kangaroo Island was a dream. Spent hours capturing sunrise at Stokes Bay. Friendly locals and unique landscapes made every day memorable. I do recommend a 4WD if you want to access the more remote spots.

Perfect for unplugging and getting back to nature. Spotted koalas for the first time in the wild at Hanson Bay. We loved the honey farm visit. Mobile reception was patchy at our cottage, but it made it easy to disconnect and just enjoy.

Celebrated our anniversary here—signal was spotty but we didn’t mind. The food was fresh, especially the cheeses and seafood. Seal Bay tour was so informative. Would definitely return in spring for wildflowers.

Incredible views and so much wildlife, but keep in mind the weather changes fast! Some attractions were farther apart than we expected, so plan for longer drives. The peace and quiet are unmatched.

Loved exploring the caves and tasting fresh honey straight from the source. The local gin distillery was a fun stop, too. Wish there were more buses, though, since we didn’t rent a car. Gorgeous sunsets every evening.

Kangaroo Island is perfect for couples. We split our time between hiking and lazing on empty beaches. One downside was the restaurant hours—many places closed early. Still, we loved the relaxed pace.

Nature at its best! Took a guided tour to spot echidnas and wallabies. The pure honey is a must-try. Next time, I’ll bring a better pair of hiking boots for the bush trails.

Brought my parents here for a quiet retreat. Flinders Chase was everyone’s favorite spot. We had kangaroos bouncing right past our deck in the morning! Dining options are limited in winter but we cooked local produce at our rental.

Beautiful place for sure, but we did find the cost of everything a bit high compared to the mainland. That said, the sea lions and Remarkable Rocks made up for it. I'd recommend at least three full days to see the best spots.

Stayed with friends over New Year’s. Loved the beaches and quirky little shops in Kingscote. Gets windy at times, and you do need a car to get around. Would go again for a longer break.

The natural beauty is amazing and you can get really close to the animals. Some shops in small towns closed by late afternoon, so plan shopping early. A great spot to unplug and reset.

The hiking trails were spectacular and never busy. I learned a lot about local history and ecology from the national park guides. Only issue: ferry was a little expensive but totally worth it for the experience. Bring snacks for drives between attractions.

Our kids adored watching pelicans at Kingscote Wharf and seeing sea lions up close at Seal Bay. Weather was chilly but we found plenty to do, and local cafes were cozy. Strongly recommend kangaroo-spotting at sunset!
