About Hobart, Australia

4.4 (20 reviews)
Hobart, Australia’s southernmost capital city, exudes an irresistible blend of historic charm and creative energy against the backdrop of dramatic Tasmanian landscapes. Settled between the sparkling Derwent River and the imposing presence of kunanyi/Mount Wellington, Hobart is both laid-back and lively, ideal for travelers keen on immersing themselves in heritage, food culture, and the outdoors. Cobbled laneways and beautifully preserved sandstone buildings tell stories of Hobart’s colonial past while contemporary art galleries and waterfront eateries inject a fresh vitality into the city’s daily rhythm.

The city’s iconic Salamanca Place is a hub for both history lovers and foodies, with its bustling Saturday market, artisan boutiques, and lively bars set amid Georgian warehouses. Art enthusiasts gravitate toward the world-renowned Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), which sparks curiosity and conversation with its provocative exhibits. A walk along the waterfront leads you to fresh seafood trucks, historic ships, and easy access to ferries bound for nature-rich Bruny Island or MONA’s own quirky jetty.

Locals are proud of Hobart’s slow-paced, friendly atmosphere. The city is also a gateway to Tasmania’s wild national parks, and it feels like nature is always close at hand – from the hiking trails up Mount Wellington to the tranquil Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens. Dining is a distinct pleasure here; chefs celebrate Tasmanian produce in restaurants that run the gamut from cozy pubs to award-winning fine dining. After a day’s exploration, cozy up in a heritage inn or boutique hotel with river views.

Getting around Hobart is straightforward — the city center is walkable, and local buses and ferries serve popular sights. Summers bring lively festivals and al fresco dining, while autumn’s crisp air and colorful foliage make for photogenic strolls. Outside the city, day trips to Port Arthur’s convict ruins or the Huon Valley’s wineries are popular with visitors looking to see more of Tasmania’s varied landscapes.

Pack layers regardless of the season – weather can change quickly, especially if you’re venturing up Mount Wellington. Be sure to take advantage of the local fresh produce and try something uniquely Tasmanian, from cheeses to award-winning gin.

We loved exploring Salamanca Market and tasting all the local food – the oysters were the best I’ve ever had! MONA was definitely a highlight; it’s quirky and thought-provoking. Our hotel in Battery Point had so much character. Just wish we’d had a bit more time to explore the hiking trails.

Hobart has this relaxed vibe that's hard to find in bigger cities. The view from the top of Mount Wellington was amazing – you can see the whole city and river stretched out before you. Getting around on foot was easy, and the seafood on the docks is world class.

Beautiful scenery and great food everywhere! MONA was a bit crowded in the afternoon, so I’d recommend going early. We found some lovely cafes in the city center. It gets chilly at night, even in autumn, so bring something warm.

The city felt really safe and welcoming for our family. Our kids loved the Botanical Gardens and feeding the ducks. Battery Point was charming for an afternoon stroll. A couple of dinner spots were pricey, but the quality made up for it.

I didn’t expect Hobart to have such a vibrant art scene! MONA was simply unforgettable. The combo of history and creative energy in Salamanca made me want to stay longer. Take a ferry ride on the Derwent River if you can.

I came mainly for hiking and was not disappointed. Mount Wellington’s trails are excellent and well marked. Weather turned quickly though, so be prepared. The city is small but has enough to fill a few days.

The harbor is beautiful at any time of day, and I had the best fish and chips ever at one of the food trucks. The history here is fascinating, especially the old prison stories. Worth the trip south if you’re exploring Australia.

Came with my sister for a food and wine holiday. The wineries outside the city are picture perfect, so definitely book a tour. Loved our boutique hotel by the waterfront. MONA’s ferry ride is fun but can get windy!

Chilly in winter but still a lot to do. The pubs are cozy and the local whisky is really good. We did a ghost tour which was a cool twist on the city’s history. Not as many restaurants open late during the week.

We combined Hobart with some days exploring national parks nearby. The city’s small size made it easy to see a lot without feeling rushed. The gardens were in full bloom. The city feels safe even when walking alone in the evening.

Enjoyed the architecture and old buildings, but some attractions like MONA and Salamanca Market were a bit too busy. Prices for accommodation higher than I expected. Still, very photogenic and worth a couple of days.

Friendly people and great for slow travelers. We spent hours just wandering the waterfront and ducking into galleries. It does get a bit quiet at night outside the center, but that suited us fine.

Solo trip here and never felt lonely – locals are chatty. The food scene is fresh and creative, especially breakfast spots. Some attractions close early in the off-season, so check ahead.
