About Cradle Mountain, Australia

4.4 (20 reviews)
Cradle Mountain, Australia is renowned for its rugged alpine scenery, pristine wilderness, and dramatic mountain landscapes. Situated in the heart of Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area, this destination captivates visitors with its soaring peaks, deep glacial lakes, and diverse flora and fauna. It’s a place where the tranquility of nature meets awe-inspiring adventure, attracting outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, and photographers from around the world.

The centerpiece of the area is Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, home to the iconic jagged summit of Cradle Mountain and the reflective waters of Dove Lake. Visitors flock to experience the world-famous Overland Track, a multi-day trek that traverses ancient rainforests, alpine heathlands, and dramatic valleys. Shorter walks such as the Dove Lake Circuit and Enchanted Walk offer accessible options with breathtaking views, while wildlife like wombats, echidnas, and Tasmanian devils are often spotted around the trails and lodges.

The atmosphere here is serene and invigorating, offering a true escape from city life. Despite being remote, the area features comfortable lodges, eco-friendly retreats, and cozy cabins that blend naturally with the environment. Local dining often emphasizes Tasmanian produce—think fresh salmon, cheeses, and cool-climate wines—enjoyed beside roaring fireplaces after a day in the mountains.

Getting around is straightforward, with well-marked park shuttles and walking paths. Most visitors stay in the village area near the park entrance, which provides easy access to visitor centers, gear rental, and guided tours. Weather can be unpredictable, so bringing layers and rain gear is essential for any season.

Spring and autumn are especially stunning, with wildflowers and shifting colors blanketing the landscape, but every season brings its own magic (and fewer crowds in winter). Booking accommodations in advance is highly recommended, especially during the busy summer months. Be prepared for quickly changing weather, and allow time to truly immerse yourself in this remarkable wilderness.

General Advice

Plan for a mix of weather, no matter the season—Tasmania’s highlands can switch from warm sun to sleet in a matter of hours. Book your accommodation and activities well in advance, as space is limited and the area is very popular, especially during holidays. Bring suitable gear for hiking, sturdy shoes, and plenty of water and snacks for day trips into the park. Respect the fragile ecosystem by staying on marked trails and following all park guidelines. Cell coverage can be spotty, so downloading maps and information beforehand is a good idea.

Security & Safety

The area is generally safe with minimal crime, but natural hazards can be a concern. Watch for rapidly changing weather, slippery paths, and hypothermia risks, especially in colder months. Stay on established trails, let someone know your plans if hiking solo, and carry a basic first aid kit. Always check in at the visitor center for latest trail and weather updates. Keep your food secure to avoid attracting wildlife, and practice standard safety like locking your car and cabin.

Travel Tips

  • Dress in warm, moisture-wicking layers with a waterproof jacket.
  • Purchase a Cradle Mountain National Park Pass before entering.
  • Start popular hikes early in the morning to avoid midday crowds.
  • Pack snacks and refillable water bottles, as dining options in the park are limited.
  • Carry a camera or phone with extra battery for the incredible scenery.
  • Book accommodation and guided tours 3-6 months in advance, particularly for summer.
  • Bring sunscreen and insect repellent, even on cloudy days.
  • Consider renting a car for flexibility, but use park shuttles where possible to reduce congestion.

The Overland Track was challenging but absolutely worth it! The scenery around Dove Lake is like nowhere else and we saw wombats right beside the walking trail. Packing for all weather was key, but coming prepared meant we could enjoy every minute.

I loved how quiet and peaceful Cradle Mountain felt even during the busy season. The Enchanted Walk was great for younger kids and spotting pademelons became a fun family tradition. We had some rain, so good waterproof boots were a lifesaver.

The views from Marion’s Lookout are breathtaking, but the climb was steeper than I expected. Our lodge had fantastic local wine and cheese in the evenings. Only downside was spotty Wi-Fi, but honestly it helped us unplug from work.

We spent three days hiking and exploring. The wildlife was a huge highlight—my husband was thrilled to capture photos of a wombat at dusk. The visitor centre staff were super helpful with advice on shorter walks.

Can’t beat sunrise at Dove Lake! The reflection of the mountains was surreal. The weather was unpredictable though—one minute sunshine, the next a shower. Worth every crazy weather twist.

Loved the sense of remoteness and the crisp air. Park shuttle buses made it easy to get around without worrying about parking. Some restaurants are a bit pricey, but the food was delicious and locally sourced.

It’s a beautiful place but I found the cold a bit intense even in May. The paths can get muddy, too, so walking sticks came in handy. Still glad I visited but would come in summer next time.

We visited in winter and the snow on the mountain was magical, but some walks were closed due to ice. Our cabin had a fireplace which was cozy after long days outdoors. Fewer crowds were a plus!

Absolutely loved seeing wallabies right by our villa. We joined an evening spotlighting tour and spotted a Tasmanian devil! Be sure to pack lots of layers, even in August we needed gloves.

Fog rolled in on our Dove Lake walk, which made for some dramatic photos. The solitude in winter was great, just pack extra warm clothes! Staff at the visitor center were so welcoming.

Incredible wildflower displays in spring and crystal-clear lakes everywhere. We hardly saw any litter—so impressed with everyone’s respect for nature. Wish we had booked another night to do more trails.

Great experience for outdoor lovers, but be ready for limited mobile reception. The views are 100% worth the disconnect though. The visitor center café had simple but tasty food.

We enjoyed peaceful hikes and even caught a glimpse of a platypus! Some muddy sections on the trails after rain, but staff gave good advice on which routes were open. My partner’s favorite part was the early morning kangaroo sightings.

The scenery changes so much depending on the weather—we had sun, mist, and even a little snow. Cabin was basic but comfortable, and the staff were always approachable. Wi-Fi slow at times, but didn’t really matter given the amazing nature.
