About Canberra, Australia

4.5 (20 reviews)
Canberra, Australia’s purpose-built capital, stands out for its meticulously planned layout, lush parks, and a strong focus on national culture and history. Set around Lake Burley Griffin, the city blends striking modern architecture with wide expanses of green, creating an atmosphere that's relaxed yet distinctly cosmopolitan. Unlike the bustling energy of Sydney or Melbourne, Canberra offers a quieter, more refined experience that appeals to both first-time visitors and returning travelers.

The city is home to Australia’s most significant museums and galleries. The Australian War Memorial, a poignant tribute to the nation’s history, is both museum and ceremonial ground. Art lovers can explore the National Gallery of Australia, which houses an impressive collection of Indigenous and international art. The Parliament House, with its iconic grass-topped design, invites visitors to witness democracy in action. Beyond the major sights, Canberra’s scenic lakeside parks, mountain views, and cycling trails offer ample opportunities to enjoy the outdoors.

Canberra’s multicultural community and recent food scene resurgence add lively elements to the city’s reputation. You’ll find everything from cozy cafés in Braddon to bustling farmers’ markets and fine dining options scattered across the city. Local events, like Floriade in spring or Enlighten Festival in autumn, transform the streets into colorful hubs of activity. Locals are proud of their city’s reputation for friendliness, safety, and relaxed lifestyle—making it an easy place for travelers to feel at home.

Getting around Canberra is convenient, with an efficient public bus and light rail network connecting major attractions. The city center has a variety of accommodation options, ranging from stylish boutique hotels to family-friendly apartments. Dining is diverse, with plenty of choices for all budgets around Civic, Kingston, and NewActon precincts. Walking and cycling are popular ways to explore, thanks to flat pathways and lakefront promenades.

Canberra experiences distinct seasons: spring (September–November) is especially popular for garden displays and festivals, while autumn brings beautiful foliage and crisp air. Winters can be cool but rarely extreme, and summers are generally warm and dry. For fewer crowds, visit outside of parliamentary sitting weeks and school holidays, and take some time to discover the charming villages and wineries in the surrounding Canberra District.

General Advice

Canberra is a laid-back, accessible city with excellent facilities for travelers. Most major national attractions are within a short drive or cycle from the city center, and many are free to enter. The community is welcoming, and the pace of life is slower than in other capitals, making Canberra ideal for families, art lovers, and anyone looking for a blend of culture and outdoor activities. Plan your visit around festivals for a more vibrant city experience, and don’t miss the surrounding wineries or wildlife reserves for easy day trips.

Security & Safety

Canberra is consistently ranked as one of Australia’s safest cities with low crime rates. Standard precautions apply: keep valuables secure, especially at night or in busy public places, and lock vehicles when parked. Solo travelers, including women, generally find Canberra safe to explore both day and night. If driving, be aware of local wildlife—kangaroos occasionally cross roads, especially at dawn and dusk.

Our family spent four days exploring Canberra and felt completely at ease the whole time. The Australian War Memorial was deeply moving and the kids loved Questacon. We walked everywhere thanks to all the wide footpaths and parks. The only downside was that some restaurants in Civic got really busy, so book ahead if you can.

I came for Floriade and it was everything I hoped—flowers everywhere and great atmosphere. The public transport was easy to navigate and I enjoyed strolling around the lake. The city is quieter than Sydney but felt very safe and welcoming. Could use a few more nightlife options.

Canberra surprised me! I loved the modern architecture of Parliament House and spent hours at the National Gallery. Evenings in Braddon had a great vibe with so many cool cafés. I’d recommend bringing sunscreen—the sun is intense in summer.

Visited for a long weekend with my partner. We cycled around Lake Burley Griffin and explored the botanic gardens—so peaceful. The National Museum was fascinating and the exhibits were very interactive. Accommodation booked up fast, so reserve early, especially during school holidays.

We did a quick trip for Parliament House tours and ended up staying longer than planned. The art and culture here exceed expectations for such a small city. It’s easy to get around but with a car you can also visit some of the wineries nearby. Not everything stays open late, so plan your evenings.

Came for work but made time for the museum and botanic gardens. Canberra’s layout is so orderly and the people are genuinely helpful. It’s not the same as Australia’s larger cities but that’s part of the charm. Only wish I had time for a hot air balloon ride!

The balance of nature and urban life here really impressed me. Rode an e-scooter along the lakeshore and visited the science center. Great food for all budgets and some really interesting local wines. Would visit again, especially for the local festivals.

We brought our teenage kids for a history trip. The War Memorial stands out—it’s massive and so much to learn. We all enjoyed the Old Bus Depot Markets on Sunday. Some of the galleries were a bit busy, but staff managed the crowds well.

Nice change of pace from Sydney. Canberra has an easygoing feel and lots of open spaces. Cycling around was a highlight for me. Food was tasty but be prepared—it’s not the cheapest city for dining out.

Winter in Canberra means clear blue skies and crisp mornings—perfect for hiking up Mount Ainslie. I found so many great photo spots near the lake. Lots of free activities too. Definitely worth visiting if you’re curious about Australian history.

Traveled solo and always felt safe walking around, even at night. The city is compact, so it’s easy to see a lot in just a few days. The botanic gardens and science museum were my favorites. Local transport was reliable, but buses get less frequent at night.

Was here for a conference and stayed an extra day to explore. National Museum has some great interactive displays. Lots of families and students everywhere, which gives the city energy. Wish there were more late-night places open.

Best part for me was wandering through the markets and trying all sorts of Aussie snacks. The local art galleries surprised me—incredible variety. Everything felt clean and well-organized. Only minor complaint: taxis could be slow to arrive during peak hours.

Really enjoyed my stay—Parliament House tour was informative and interesting. Lake views were great for evening walks. Super easy to rent a bike and find your way around. A few construction sites near the city center but didn’t spoil the views.

Nice place for a cultural weekend, but a bit too quiet in the evenings for my taste. The museums were excellent and well spaced out. It’s definitely best for those interested in history and art rather than nightlife.

The mix of nature and modern buildings was exactly what I wanted in a short holiday. Great for photographers—sunset at Mount Ainslie is not to be missed. Would have loved more options for live music, but still a solid holiday spot.

We did a guided cycling tour and learned so much about the history of Canberra. Food at the night markets was a highlight—so much international variety. I found the city calm and very clean. Wish we’d had time for a winery tour outside town.
