About Broome, Australia

4.4 (20 reviews)
Broome is a captivating coastal town in Western Australia's remote Kimberley region, where the desert meets the Indian Ocean. Known for its striking red sandstone cliffs, tropical climate, and rich multicultural history, Broome has evolved from a tiny pearling port to a relaxed getaway and the gateway to the Kimberley’s vast wilderness. Its colorful sunsets over turquoise water and the legendary Cable Beach make Broome a destination that feels both adventurous and relaxing.

Visitors are drawn to the area’s unique natural spectacles, including the ‘Staircase to the Moon’—a phenomenon where the full moon reflects off tidal flats to create what looks like steps rising to the sky. Cable Beach’s 22 kilometers of white sand are perfect for camel rides at dusk, while Gantheaume Point reveals dinosaur footprints at low tide. You’ll also find the world-famous Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park, pearl showrooms, vibrant Chinatown, and Aboriginal art galleries that offer a window into Broome’s multicultural tapestry.

Life here moves at a laid-back pace, yet there’s always something happening—whether it’s the Broome Race Round, touring a working pearl farm, or catching a film at Sun Pictures, the world’s oldest operating outdoor cinema. The town’s fusion of cultures is reflected in its food, with flavors from Southeast Asia, Australia, and local indigenous communities featured in bustling night markets and seaside eateries.

Getting around is simple; Broome is compact enough for cycling and walking, though tours and 4WD excursions are popular for reaching sites like Cape Leveque or venturing further into the Kimberley. From boutique hotels and luxury resorts to charming guesthouses, there’s a range of places to stay, but booking ahead in the dry season is smart as Broome becomes a hotspot for Australian winter sunseekers. Expect delicious seafood, relaxed beach cafés, and lively community markets packed with local crafts and produce.

The best time to visit Broome is between May and October when the weather is dry, sunny, and comfortably warm. Wet season (November to April) brings heat, humidity, and tropical storms, but also fewer tourists and lush landscapes. Remember to plan your coastal explorations with the tides in mind—some natural wonders are only accessible at certain times. Sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water are essentials for every visitor.

General Advice

Planning your trip around the dry season (May to October) ensures pleasant weather, accessible roads, and full access to Broome’s main attractions. The town can get busy during peak periods and school holidays, so book your accommodation and popular tours early. Spend time learning about local indigenous culture and history, and don’t hesitate to join guided excursions for deeper insights into the Kimberley region’s dramatic landscapes. If you’re venturing out of town, check road conditions and tide times, as parts of the coast and wilderness can become inaccessible after rain or high tides.

Security & Safety

Broome is generally a safe and welcoming town, but regular travel precautions apply. Sun protection is critical due to the intense UV, and swimming is safest where nets or patrols are present, as the region occasionally experiences jellyfish and crocodile activity. Lock vehicles and accommodations, especially at night, and remain aware of wildlife if exploring beyond urban areas. Always respect local communities, land, and cultural sites, and heed posted safety signs at beaches and tidal areas.

Travel Tips

  • Pack lightweight clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and strong sunscreen for daytime outings.
  • Plan visits to natural sites like Gantheaume Point with the tide schedule to see dinosaur footprints.
  • Book sunset camel rides on Cable Beach in advance, especially in the peak season.
  • Try local pearl meat and fresh seafood at Broome’s seaside restaurants.
  • Rent a car or join a guided tour for day trips beyond town; road conditions may require 4WD.
  • Markets often run in the dry season—check for night markets at Town Beach for great street food and crafts.
  • Bring insect repellent, as sandflies and mosquitoes are common near water and after sunset.
  • Mobile reception is strong in town but may be patchy if you venture into the Kimberley.

We spent four days lounging at Cable Beach and couldn’t have asked for a better way to unwind after some long travels. The sunsets were unreal and the kids loved the camel rides. We did find it a bit expensive compared to other places in Australia, but it was truly memorable.

Broome blew me away! I’d always wanted to see the dinosaur footprints, and Gantheaume Point did not disappoint. The red cliffs against the blue sea are something I’ll never forget. People in town were welcoming and the food was excellent, especially the fresh barramundi.

Visiting Broome solo was peaceful and safe. Walking around Chinatown and checking out the local art got me interested in the town's multicultural history. Only thing is, the humidity even in September was stronger than I expected.

We took a pearl farm tour at Willie Creek, and it was a fantastic insight into Broome’s past. The Staircase to the Moon was surreal—I’d never seen anything like it! Wish we’d had a car for exploring more beaches though.

My partner and I timed our trip to watch the Staircase to the Moon, and it was absolutely magical. Had amazing meals at the Town Beach markets and discovered some beautiful pearls while shopping. We’re already planning to come back next year!

Went to Broome for a photography project—the colours and light here are unreal. Visited Malcolm Douglas Crocodile Park which was educational and fun. Wet season made things a little damp but it didn’t spoil the experience.

Loved the cultural side with all the Aboriginal art but there was a lot of rain during my visit. Some attractions were closed due to weather, so if you want to do everything, definitely come in the dry season.

Cable Beach exceeded all expectations, but be prepared for crowds during sunset. We managed to get a table at a beachside café and the view made up for waiting in line. Great place to relax and watch the world go by.

Our group did a 4WD adventure up to Cape Leveque, which was the trip highlight. Broome’s laid-back vibe helped us really unwind before heading further into the Kimberley. The colourful street art in Chinatown caught my eye, too!

Broome feels a bit like another world—coastal, tropical, and quite remote. I spent hours getting lost in the history at the museum and enjoyed the peace of Town Beach on quieter mornings.

We camped just outside town and loved exploring by bike. The heat and sun can be intense so definitely pack extra water and sunscreen. Our favorite memory was seeing the moon rise over Roebuck Bay.

Had fun with some mates in Broome but a lot of places shut down early because it's low season. Still, catching a movie at Sun Pictures was awesome, even with a few bats flying around!

Our family loved every minute—especially the camel ride at sunset. Markets had surprisingly good international food and we snagged some unique jewelry made from local pearls. Can’t wait to come back for a longer stay.

Stayed here as a backpacker while touring across Australia. The historic Chinatown district was a fun place to hang out and meet other travelers. Prices are a bit higher than I expected, but worth it for the scenery.

Lovely spot for couples! We enjoyed walking along the shore at dawn and checking out the Aboriginal galleries. Wish there were more vegetarian options at the markets, but the fruit juices were fantastic.

Broome was perfect for our babymoon. We relaxed by the pool, had long lazy breakfasts, and strolled the beach every day. Locals gave us some great tips for day trips outside town.

Simply stunning location. I'll never forget the moonrise and those incredible red cliffs. Next time I want to rent a 4WD and do more of the Gibb River Road.
