About Alice Springs, Australia

4.4 (20 reviews)
Alice Springs sits in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre, surrounded by scorched deserts, rugged mountains, and an endless horizon that draws travellers seeking authenticity and adventure. Known as a base for exploring the Outback, Alice Springs delivers a sense of remoteness you won’t find elsewhere, offering both cultural richness and striking landscapes. The contrast between the ochre earth, big skies, and bursts of greenery along the Todd River make it truly unforgettable.

The town is packed with attractions that tell the story of Central Australia, from the immersive Alice Springs Desert Park to landmarks like the historic Royal Flying Doctor Service. Art lovers will enjoy the many Aboriginal art galleries showcasing Arrernte and other desert art traditions. It’s also the starting point for iconic journeys such as the Larapinta Trail and excursions to Simpson’s Gap, Ormiston Gorge, and the majestic MacDonnell Ranges.

Culture permeates daily life here, with a thriving Aboriginal community and frequent markets, arts events, and festivals such as Parrtjima – A Festival in Light. The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming, with friendly locals happy to share insights into NT life. While the town centre has conveniences like shops and cafes, you’ll find it easy to get back into nature within minutes, whether you’re camping, glamping, or staying in locally owned hotels.

Getting around is straightforward: many attractions are walking distance from town, while tours and 4WD rentals open up more remote areas. Dining options are varied, from playful bush food experiences and casual cafes to classic pubs. The climate can be extreme, so most visitors plan for cooler months (April to October), when daytime heat is manageable but nights can be chilly. Pack layers and prepare for striking sunrises and sunsets that set the landscape aglow.

General Advice

Alice Springs is a rewarding destination for those interested in Outback adventure, Aboriginal culture, and unique natural beauty. The harsh desert environment means planning is essential – be sure to carry water, sun protection, and carefully plan any excursions outside the town. Book popular tours and lodging in advance, especially during festivals or school holiday periods. Respect local customs, particularly when visiting Aboriginal communities or sacred sites, and take time to learn about the region’s history from both Indigenous and pioneer perspectives.

Security & Safety

Alice Springs is generally safe for travelers, but standard precautions apply. Take extra care if exploring the Outback independently; always let someone know your plans and never venture off-road without proper preparation, supplies, and communications. At night, stick to busy, well-lit areas in the town centre and avoid walking alone in unfamiliar places. Petty crime such as theft can occur, so keep valuables secure and exercise caution, especially at remote campsites and car parks.

Travel Tips

  • Pack for sudden temperature changes—desert days can be scorching, but nights may be cold.
  • Book guided tours for remote areas like the MacDonnell Ranges or the Kangaroo Sanctuary.
  • Respect cultural protocols when visiting Aboriginal sites—ask before taking photographs.
  • Plan for at least 3-4 days to see key attractions and do a day trip or two.
  • Use fly nets and insect repellent when hiking or camping, especially after rains.
  • Tap water is safe to drink in Alice Springs—consider carrying a reusable bottle.
  • If self-driving, ensure your vehicle is well-maintained and equipped for Outback conditions.
  • The nearest major airport is Alice Springs Airport, a short drive from town.

The Desert Park was way more interesting than I expected—lots to see and learn. Our hotel was central and comfortable, but we found food and tours a bit pricey. Still worth it for the experience!

Really enjoyed the Kangaroo Sanctuary tour, especially meeting the joeys. The town itself is a bit quiet at night, but the landscapes totally make up for it. Take plenty of water if you're going out hiking.

Our family loved learning about the School of the Air. The heat took some getting used to, but we managed by planning activities early and late in the day. Plenty of unique souvenirs in the art galleries.

Camping under the stars near the West MacDonnell Ranges is something I’ll never forget. Alice Springs itself had good food and friendly people. Would recommend hiring a 4WD if you want to explore beyond town.

Nice town with great walks, but public transport is pretty limited unless you join tours. The Telegraph Station was worth a visit. Wish we'd had more time for the day trips.

Travelled with friends and enjoyed the local art scene. The summer heat made it tough to do everything on our list, so maybe plan for cooler months. Markets were fun and had unique crafts.

Friendly locals, easy-going town atmosphere. The School of the Air museum opened my eyes to remote education. It gets very hot, so pace yourself if exploring outdoors.

Stunning nature and so much history in this small city. We rented a campervan for extra flexibility and slept under the stars. Would definitely return, maybe for the camel races next time!
