About Detroit, United States

4.4 (21 reviews)
Detroit, known as the Motor City, pulses with an unmistakable mix of grit, creativity, and cultural pride. Once the epicenter of automotive innovation, the city has transformed itself with a dynamic arts community, historic landmarks, and a revitalized downtown that invites exploration. Visitors are drawn by Detroit's lively music history, from Motown to techno, and its ever-evolving food and craft cocktail scene.

A walk through Detroit reveals icons like the Detroit Institute of Arts with its Diego Rivera murals, the stately Fox Theatre, and the revitalized riverfront stretching along the Detroit River. Music fans can tour the Motown Museum, while sports lovers catch a game at Comerica Park or Ford Field. The trendy Corktown and Midtown neighborhoods buzz with indie boutiques, creative eateries, and public art walls. Don't miss Belle Isle, an island park with scenic views and family-friendly attractions.

Detroit’s character is forged by its resilience and creative spirit. The city’s street art, live jazz clubs, and rich African-American heritage are woven into everyday life. Markets like Eastern Market give a taste of local flavors, and the friendliness of Detroiters adds warmth to any visit. From historic architecture to buzzing new breweries, the city feels accessible and alive.

Getting around Detroit is manageable, especially with the QLINE streetcar, People Mover, and plenty of rideshare options. Many major attractions are within easy reach of downtown hotels, though having a car allows for more flexibility to explore neighborhoods. Dining options range from classic Coney Islands to farm-to-table restaurants, and there’s a growing vegan scene. For a unique stay, consider boutique hotels in downtown or charming guesthouses in Midtown.

Detroit shines in late spring through fall, when outdoor festivals light up the streets and weather is ideal for walking and waterfront activities. Winters can be cold and snowy, but lower crowds make for relaxed museum visits. Timing your trip during events like the Detroit Jazz Festival or the North American International Auto Show adds extra excitement.

The Detroit Institute of Arts was top of my list and absolutely lived up to the hype. We loved walking the Riverwalk at sunset too. Would’ve liked a few more public transit options at night, but overall great vibe and super friendly locals.

Went for the auto show and ended up staying an extra day just to explore Midtown. There’s a lot of old-school charm with new restaurants popping up everywhere. Traffic around events was pretty bad but it felt safe and lively.

Eastern Market on Saturday morning was a highlight—so many colors and incredible food. Belle Isle was perfect for a family picnic. I didn’t expect Detroit to feel so much like a community, but it really does.

I’m a Motown fan so the Hitsville house was basically a pilgrimage. Nightlife surprised me, especially the live music in Corktown. Some blocks were a bit quiet after hours, but nothing felt sketchy.

Very cool city, but the winter was rough—wish I’d gone later in the year. The museums were great and everyone we met was helpful, but sidewalks were icy in spots. Still glad I finally made it.

Mexicantown tacos are out of this world! Caught a Lions game, loved the energy downtown but parking was expensive. Overall, a fun weekend and so much more to do than I’d pictured.

Visited for a work conference and stayed near the Renaissance Center. Easy to walk to restaurants and the GM building had solid views. Wish the People Mover ran more frequently after 10pm.

Got caught in a snowstorm so a lot of our outdoor plans changed. But spending hours inside the DIA and Motown Museum was a solid backup plan. Not every area felt lively at night, but downtown was cool.

We visited with our teenage kids. Comerica Park and the Detroit Science Center were their favorites. Cold weather kept us indoors more than planned, but the city has lots to offer even in winter.

Enjoyed the mix of old factories and new startups around Corktown. The city is for sure in transition, but that gives it a cool edge. Stayed in a boutique hotel in Midtown—would stay again.

Ate my weight in Coney dogs and loved every second. The Riverwalk was peaceful in the mornings and packed by the afternoon. Only wish more stores stayed open a bit later.
