About Brasov, Romania

4.5 (20 reviews)
Brasov sits at the foot of Romania’s Carpathian Mountains, blending centuries-old architecture with a lively modern vibe. Known for its medieval walls, cobblestone squares, and colorful baroque buildings, this city feels like stepping into a storybook while still buzzing with contemporary energy. Surrounded by forested hills and crowned by the Black Church’s gothic spire, Brasov offers a seamless mixture of history, culture, and natural scenery.

The main attraction is the charming Council Square (Piața Sfatului), where locals and travelers mingle at outdoor cafés beneath the shadow of the Tampa Mountain. Explore narrow, winding streets lined with boutiques, bakeries, and centuries-old monuments, then hike or take the cable car to the top of Tampa Mountain for panoramic views of the red rooftops. Key experiences include touring the Black Church, wandering through the ancient city gates, and strolling along Rope Street–one of the narrowest streets in Europe.

Brasov’s culture is a blend of German, Hungarian, and Romanian influences, reflected in everything from the cuisine to the architecture. Locals are proud of their heritage, and visitors will find warm hospitality in bustling markets, cozy pubs, and family-run guesthouses. Throughout the city, lively festivals and open-air concerts bring the old town to life, especially during the summer.

Getting around is easy on foot, though public buses make it convenient to reach the train station or nearby resorts like Poiana Brasov. Accommodations range from boutique hotels in restored mansions to budget-friendly hostels, while dining options include hearty Transylvanian fare, international restaurants, and mouthwatering street food. If you have time, Brasov is also the perfect base for day trips to Bran Castle or the striking Peles Castle.

Although Brasov is appealing year-round, spring and autumn promise mild weather and fewer crowds. Winter draws skiers to the nearby slopes, and December transforms the old town into a festive wonderland with Christmas markets. For those wanting both history and adventure on their holiday, Brasov skillfully delivers both.

General Advice

Brasov is an easy-going, walkable city ideal for travelers seeking a mix of historic ambiance and outdoor adventure. It’s a great base for exploring Transylvania, with regular buses and trains connecting you to other sights. Most locals speak basic English, especially in hotels and restaurants, but learning a few Romanian phrases is always appreciated. Credit cards are accepted in many places, though it’s handy to have some cash for small shops or street food.

Security & Safety

Brasov is generally very safe, including for solo travelers and families. Petty theft like pickpocketing can happen in crowded areas such as the main squares and on public transport, so keep an eye on your belongings. Avoid walking alone through forest paths after dark, and check opening hours for city gates or forested attractions so you don’t get locked in. For winter travelers, watch out for icy sidewalks and stick to marked trails during hikes.

Travel Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes—most streets are cobbled and some sights are steep.
  • Buy tickets for the Tampa Mountain cable car at less busy times to avoid queues.
  • Try local specialties like chimney cake (kürtőskalács) and sarmale (stuffed cabbage rolls).
  • Use the bus system or taxis for getting to and from the train/bus station.
  • Consider a guesthouse in the old town for an authentic experience.
  • Book accommodation early in summer and around winter holidays.
  • Many museums and attractions are closed on Mondays—plan your itinerary accordingly.
  • Bring layers even in summer; evenings can be chilly, especially in the mountains.

I fell in love with Brasov’s old town! The Council Square had so much energy, and I spent hours exploring the side streets. Don’t miss the cable car up Tampa Mountain—it was the highlight of my weekend. Only wish some cafes stayed open later.

Beautiful city between the mountains. The Black Church is impressive, and our hike up Tampa Mountain rewarded us with amazing views. I recommend trying local pastries at the market. Some parts are crowded with tour groups, though.

Our family had so much fun in Brasov. The old town was perfect for wandering with kids, and Rope Street made for great photos. We did a day trip to Bran Castle and it was super easy from here. Food was hearty and filling!

Spent Christmas in Brasov and loved the festive atmosphere—lights, markets, and mulled wine everywhere. It did get very cold and a little bit icy, but the snowy rooftops were magical. The narrow streets can get slippery in winter shoes.

I came as a solo traveler, felt safe and welcome everywhere. The architecture is gorgeous and so much history in every corner. Enjoyed climbing Tampa Mountain and sampling chimney cake in the main square. Only downside: buses to Peles Castle are a bit irregular.

Plenty to see and do for a week. The old town is lively but not too chaotic. Enjoyed Romanian food and the friendly vibe. The only small issue was finding parking near our hotel, but otherwise a great place.

Loved exploring all the old gates and medieval bastions. Rope Street is quirky and fun. Some attractions were closed on Monday which was a bummer, so double-check opening times. The views from Tampa Mountain are worth the climb!

So much character packed into a small city. We used Brasov as our base for exploring Transylvania—day trips to Bran and Peles were simple. The street food stalls had some of the best snacks I’ve tried in Europe.

Impressed by how peaceful the city felt, even with lots of tourists around. Enjoyed walking through the autumn leaves in the park. Locals were happy to recommend restaurants. Bring cash for smaller places!

Came for skiing and loved the proximity to Poiana Brasov—quick bus ride away. Brasov itself is very atmospheric, especially with snow. Could have used a few more English signs in town, but we managed fine.

Spent a few days as a couple and found so many romantic spots. Evening strolls were delightful, and candle-lit dinners in the old town were a treat. Some places got crowded with tour groups during the day but evenings were lovely and quiet.

Good destination but felt a bit touristy in some areas. The Black Church was cool but lots of people. Enjoyed climbing Tampa Mountain and relaxing with local beer afterward. Worth seeing but maybe not for a super long stay.

Brasov’s Christmas market is definitely worth the trip if you’re there in winter. It got really busy on weekends, so try weekdays for a calmer experience. Warm mulled wine helped with the chill.

Chilly winter visit, but totally worth it for the snowy views! The Black Church was bigger than I expected, and we found cozy tea houses to warm up. Be careful walking on the icy old streets.

Our kids (ages 9 and 12) loved exploring the narrow streets and trying Romanian desserts. The old fortifications felt like something out of a fairytale. It’s a very family-friendly city overall.

One of the prettiest places I’ve visited in Europe. The view from Tampa Mountain is unforgettable, and the square comes alive at night. Everything was easy to access and locals are super welcoming.
