About Gozo, Malta

4.4 (20 reviews)
Gozo, Malta’s enchanting sister island, captivates travelers with its laid-back pace and scenic countryside. Smaller and greener than the main island of Malta, Gozo is known for its rolling hills, dramatic coastal cliffs, and rustic villages. The island offers an inviting blend of Mediterranean tranquility and centuries-old heritage, making it an ideal destination for anyone seeking a balance of adventure, relaxation, and cultural discovery.

History comes alive in Gozo, where you can explore megalithic wonders like the Ġgantija Temples—some of the world’s oldest free-standing structures—alongside medieval citadels and splendid baroque churches. The coastline is dotted with spectacular sites such as Dwejra Bay (once home to the Azure Window), the Inland Sea, and the luminous Blue Hole, all favored by snorkelers and divers. Ramla Bay, with its signature red sand, is a favorite spot for beachgoers, while Xlendi is cherished for seaside dining and cliffside walks.

Life on Gozo moves at a gentler rhythm; you’ll meet welcoming locals selling fresh produce at village markets or playing music in pretty piazzas. Traditional festas light up the summer nights, and the streets fill with the aroma of Gozitan specialties like ftira and pastizzi. A drive or bike ride across the island takes you past vineyards, old stone farmhouses, and panoramic viewpoints around every bend.

Getting around Gozo is straightforward, whether by rented car, scooter, or local bus, and accommodation ranges from boutique farmhouses to cozy guesthouses and seaside hotels. Culinary offerings emphasize fresh Mediterranean ingredients, with excellent seafood and locally produced cheeses and wines. It’s easy to combine restful afternoons at the beach with days of exploring hidden caves, rural trails, and legendary sites.

Spring and early autumn are especially pleasant, avoiding the peak summer crowds and heat. Bring comfortable shoes for exploring rugged terrain, and don’t miss an evening walk inside Victoria’s Cittadella as the sun sets over the island’s rolling fields and villages.

General Advice

Gozo is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace, so allow extra time to explore both well-known and lesser-visited sights. Renting a car or scooter gives you flexibility, especially since some scenic areas aren’t always easily reached by bus. English is widely spoken, and the island feels safe and friendly for solo, couple, or family travelers. During the busy summer months, booking accommodation in advance is wise, and if you’re coming for diving or festivals, plan ahead for tours and events.

Security & Safety

Gozo is generally very safe, with low rates of crime and a welcoming atmosphere. Basic precautions should still be followed: don’t leave valuables unattended on beaches or in your car, and keep an eye on belongings in busier tourist areas. Along the cliffs and coastal paths, pay attention to safety signs and keep a safe distance from edges, as some areas can be windy and slippery. At night, the villages are quiet, but it's always wise to stay aware of your surroundings.

Travel Tips

  • Ferries from Malta run frequently; check schedules in advance, especially in winter.
  • Renting a small car or scooter makes it easier to reach hidden beaches and villages.
  • Try local specialties like Gozitan cheese (ġbejna) and ftira bread.
  • Best swimming and snorkeling are from late May to early October.
  • Respect local customs, especially during religious celebrations and festas.
  • Wear sturdy shoes for hiking trails and exploring countryside roads.
  • Tap water is safe but can taste mineral-heavy; bottled water is widely available.
  • Carry cash for smaller shops and markets, though credit cards are accepted at most establishments.

Gozo has such a chill vibe compared to the main island. We spent hours just wandering Victoria’s streets and eating amazing seafood by the water in Xlendi. It’s not flashy, but that’s exactly why we loved it. I just wish we had more time for some of the hiking trails.

The Ġgantija Temples blew my mind! Knowing they’re older than the pyramids made our visit really special. We rented a scooter and had the freedom to see small beaches and hilltop villages. Totally recommend Gozo if you want something more relaxed and authentic.

We brought our kids and found Gozo super safe and easy to explore. Ramla Bay was the highlight—they loved the unusual red sand. Only thing was, bus schedules were a bit tricky for getting back late from some places. We’ll rent a car next time!

The coastal scenery is epic, especially around Dwejra. Diving at the Blue Hole was a first for me, and I’m hooked now. Towns shut down early outside the summer season, so plan your meals ahead in the evenings. Would return in a heartbeat.

Gozo’s food scene surprised us—so many fresh, simple dishes and friendly cafés everywhere. The Cittadella views at sunset are incredible. Our guesthouse in Nadur was lovely but not close to the beach, so factor in travel time if staying inland.

Fantastic island for swimming and snorkeling. The water around the Inland Sea and Xlendi is crystal clear. Ferries were efficient and it was easy to get around with a rental car. Can’t wait to come back and try a farmhouse stay.

My partner and I loved the early morning walks through village markets. Local cheese and ftira are a must. It gets hot in August, so bring lots of water and sunscreen. Nights were peaceful—so different from bigger tourist spots.

Even in November, Gozo was bright and beautiful. Less crowded for sure, which made it feel personal. Some restaurants were closed for the off-season but we still found great local places. Hired e-bikes, which made the hills manageable!

As a solo female traveler, I felt really safe here. Met other travelers on a boat tour and ended up exploring the Cittadella together. The pace of the island is so refreshing. Make sure to try lemon ice cream by the square in Victoria.

Diving in Gozo is world-class—the Blue Hole was incredible. Locals helped us with gear and tips. Public transportation works but can be slow, especially on Sundays. Best decision was staying a full week and not rushing.

Pretty island with amazing historical sites, but the weather was a bit rainy when we came. Luckily, exploring the Citadel and temples is still great even if it’s wet. Wish there were more shops open during the week.

The countryside feels untouched—great for cycling and photography. We loved Ta' Pinu Basilica and the peaceful country roads. If you come in autumn, bring a light jacket as evenings get cool near the sea.

Ramla Bay was a dream, the red sand really is something else! If you’re traveling with kids, pack snacks for beach days because options nearby are limited. Boat tour to the caves was fantastic entertainment for the little ones.

Summer on Gozo means lots of village festas—the fireworks were a highlight for our family. We rented a farmhouse that had its own pool, which helped when it got super hot. Don’t miss the lemon liqueur and local wines.

We split our time between the beach and sightseeing. The Citadel was great for a bit of history, and evenings in Xlendi were lively with great food and music. Only wish parking was easier in town at peak times.

Gozo is quiet in winter, which I loved as a solo traveler. Great time for reading, hiking, and getting to know the locals. Some places were closed, so check ahead if you have must-see spots.

A friend recommended Gozo for its walking trails and rural vibe. The views from the Cittadella were breathtaking and I loved the colorful boats at Marsalforn. I’d return just for the fresh ricotta pastries.

Family trip was a huge success—kids enjoyed the safe beaches, and we appreciated how friendly everyone was. The Blue Hole is crowded in summer, but worth it if you go early in the morning. The ferry ride itself is a nice start to the adventure.
