About Milan, Italy

4.4 (20 reviews)
Milan, Italy’s bustling northern metropolis, is renowned as a global capital of fashion, design, and business. Beyond its reputation for style, the city blends dynamic modern life with layered history—its streets pulse with creativity, yet reminders of its Roman origins and Renaissance grandeur are everywhere. Milan’s atmosphere is sleek but never cold, striking a rare balance between old-world elegance and contemporary innovation.

The city is home to legendary attractions that draw millions each year. The magnificent Duomo di Milano dominates the city center with its lace-like spires, while the nearby Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II entices visitors to shop beneath soaring glass ceilings. Art lovers flock to see Leonardo da Vinci’s "The Last Supper" at Santa Maria delle Grazie, and the imposing Castello Sforzesco offers diverse museums and beautiful grounds to explore. Milan's neighborhoods, from the artistic streets of Brera to the chic boutiques of Quadrilatero della Moda, each have distinctive personalities.

Milanese culture thrives in both grand theaters and local trattorias—La Scala is world-famous for opera, and neighborhood cafés overflow with locals enjoying aperitivo as the sun sets. You’ll find a dynamic culinary scene that moves from hearty risottos to Michelin-starred surprises, as well as lively nightlife and stylish aperitivo culture. The city’s efficient public transportation makes it easy to cross from upmarket fashion districts to leafy parks or contemporary art galleries in the Navigli area, where canal-side evenings are especially lively.

Visitors often find Milan less intimidating than Rome or Venice, but equally rich in experiences. Accommodation ranges from designer hotels to cozy guesthouses, with countless options near major sights or tucked into quieter districts. English is widely spoken, but trying a few Italian phrases is always appreciated. Foodies will love experimenting with both classic Milanese dishes like ossobuco and international fusion spots catering to the city’s global population.

Milan’s busiest seasons are spring and autumn, especially during Fashion Week when the city is at its most electric (and pricy). To avoid crowds, plan for early summer or late winter visits, but always pack for changeable weather. Look out for temporary art installations and open-air events—there’s always something happening in Milan if you know where to look.

General Advice

Milan is an excellent base for exploring northern Italy thanks to its well-connected train stations and international airports. The city center is walkable, but the metro, trams, and bike-share options are efficient for reaching outlying neighborhoods. Many attractions require advance booking—especially The Last Supper viewing slots, which often sell out weeks ahead. Dining hours may be later than you’re used to, with aperitivo starting around 6pm and dinner seldom before 8pm. Dress with some style if you plan to visit upscale venues or theaters, but comfortable shoes are a must for sightseeing.

Security & Safety

Milan is generally safe, especially in central districts and during the day. As with any major city, pickpocketing can occur around tourist hotspots like the Duomo, train stations, and crowded shopping streets—keep bags zipped and avoid flashing valuables. Be cautious at night in less-trafficked areas, and use licensed taxis or public transport after dark. Keep an eye on your belongings in bars and cafes, and watch for scam artists who may approach with ‘petitions’ or requests near busy squares.

Travel Tips

  • Book tickets online in advance for popular sites like The Last Supper and La Scala.
  • Purchase a MilanoCard or 24/48-hour transit ticket if you plan to use public transport often.
  • Visit major sites early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds.
  • Many museums close on Mondays—check in advance before planning your itinerary.
  • Try aperitivo hour for an affordable dinner and a taste of local nightlife.
  • Carry a lightweight umbrella—weather can shift quickly, especially in spring and autumn.
  • Tipping is not mandatory but leaving a small amount is appreciated.
  • Bring a credit card but have some cash on hand for markets and smaller cafés.

Spent three days in Milan and still felt like there was more to discover. The Duomo rooftop was a highlight for me—those views are unreal. Only downside was the long line at the cathedral despite pre-booking, but it moved pretty quickly. Loved all the little bakeries near Brera!

I’ve lived in Turin but coming to Milan always feels special. The fashion vibe is everywhere, even in how people walk down the street! Navigli at sunset is my favorite—great bars and such a cool atmosphere. Can get expensive, but it’s so worth it for a weekend.

Loved the shopping—but wow, prices were higher than expected! I really enjoyed the Pinacoteca di Brera and found the art scene much richer than I first thought. Metro was super easy to use and saved my tired feet. Crowds around Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II were intense.

I came for work but managed to squeeze in a visit to see The Last Supper—definitely recommend booking in advance. Found some great vegetarian restaurants around Porta Venezia. The city felt very safe walking at night, even when I was alone. Public transport was a breeze.

Took my mom for her birthday and we had such a good time! She loved the opera at La Scala and I couldn’t stop taking photos of the Duomo. The aperitivo scene is so fun—great snacks with your drinks. Can’t wait to come back in a different season.

I was surprised by how modern parts of Milan are compared to the rest of Italy. Stayed near Cadorna and it was super convenient for getting around. Only thing I'd warn is watch out for pickpockets on the metro during rush hour. Food everywhere was next-level good.

Solo trip and felt comfortable everywhere! I joined a walking tour in the Brera district and learned a lot. The boutiques are amazing but I mostly window-shopped. Ate the best risotto of my life in a tiny trattoria—still dreaming about it.

We brought our kids (ages 9 and 12) and they actually enjoyed the Castello Sforzesco more than expected. Parco Sempione was perfect for a picnic. Traffic around the city center can be hectic; glad we mostly used trams. Would absolutely stay here again for a longer trip.

The art and architecture blew me away, especially the details in the Duomo. I found the Navigli canals really charming—lots of great gelato spots. Milan was colder than I expected in spring, so pack layers! Wished I’d planned more time for the museums.

Business trip but managed some sightseeing. The Galleria’s Christmas lights were magical. Drinks at a rooftop bar overlooking the city were a splurge but so worth it. Some streets were a bit noisy late at night near my hotel, but that's city life.

Visited during peak summer and wish I'd picked a cooler month. Some attractions closed for holiday, but on the plus side the city was a bit quieter. The food scene is unbelievably good—ate way too much gelato. The main shopping streets felt crowded even in August.

The Milan Fashion Week vibe was electric, even though I couldn’t get into any shows! Loved exploring the little side streets filled with stylish cafes. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is gorgeous but super busy. Will be back for more shopping.

Arrived by train and found Milan central station easy to navigate. Stayed near Porta Romana, very local vibe and amazing pizzerias. Big fan of the modern art at Fondazione Prada. Next time, I’ll try to catch a show at La Scala—it was sold out!

Milan was the highlight of our Italy trip! My teenage daughter loved the vintage shopping, and we both enjoyed strolling through Parco Sempione. People here are so stylish—I even got the confidence to try a bold outfit myself. The Duomo at sunset was unforgettable.

I was here for a quick stopover before heading to Lake Como. Loved the Christmas markets and the festive buzz. Didn’t have enough time for the museums, which I regret. Would recommend getting advance tickets for all main sites—lines can be long.

Spent four days in Milan as part of a family trip. The kids especially loved skating at Darsena and trying all the pastries. I thought public transport was affordable and reliable. Some restaurants were pretty pricey near tourist areas—head a bit further out for local spots.

Wasn’t sure what to expect, but Milan is now one of my favorite European cities. Caught a jazz night in Navigli that was just fantastic, and the crowd was so welcoming. It wasn’t as overwhelming as Rome, which I appreciated. Trams made exploring super simple.

Here for our anniversary—highly recommend the rooftop Duomo tour for couples. We ended up eating gelato by the canals every night. Shopping is on another level; we found unique things even outside the luxury brands. Friendly locals added to the charm.

I liked the city but thought it felt more like a business hub than a tourist destination compared to Florence or Venice. Still, lots of good art and museum options. The local coffee culture was a surprise highlight. Streets are pretty clean and easy to navigate.

Really enjoyed walking the Navigli canals and people-watching at the outdoor cafes. The street art and small galleries were a nice discovery away from the main sights. Streets around the Duomo got a bit too busy in the afternoons, so best to visit early.
