About Brno, Czech Republic

4.4 (20 reviews)
Brno, the Czech Republic’s spirited second city, dazzles visitors with its lively atmosphere, historic streets, and youthful vibe infused by its large student population. Tucked in the heart of Moravia, Brno is less crowded than Prague but brims with colorfully painted facades, interesting architecture, and independent cafés. The city’s unique mix of tradition and innovation makes it a favorite among culture lovers, food enthusiasts, and travelers looking for something a bit different from the typical European hotspots.

Major highlights include the imposing Špilberk Castle, which towers above the city and offers panoramic views and gripping tales from its time as a notorious prison. The UNESCO-listed Villa Tugendhat stands as an icon of modernist design, while the labyrinthine passages beneath Zelný trh square invite you into Brno’s subterranean history. Fans of quirky sights shouldn’t miss the ten o’clock bullet—Brno’s playful astronomical clock on the main square—or a visit to the ossuary beneath the Church of St. James, one of the largest in Europe.

Brno’s café and bar culture hums day and night, especially in summer when the squares turn into open-air terraces. Friendly locals fill the clubs and craft beer pubs, and you’ll find street art peeking out from tucked-away lanes. Several annual festivals—like Ignis Brunensis (the city’s international fireworks competition) and the Moravian Wine Trails—keep the calendar lively, while museums and galleries, such as the Moravian Gallery and Technical Museum, cater to every curiosity.

Getting around Brno is effortless thanks to its excellent public transport, which includes trams and buses running late into the night. Most attractions are within easy walking distance, and neighborhoods like Veveří or Žabovřesky offer affordable and comfortable accommodations. The city’s dining scene ranges from traditional Moravian cuisine in cozy cellars to innovative vegetarian bistros and experimental fine dining. Don’t leave without sampling the famous Moravian wines or fresh pastries from a local pekárna.

Spring and early autumn are considered the best times to visit, as the weather is mild and festivals are in full swing. Evenings can be brisk, so packing a sweater is a smart idea. For an insider experience, venture into the hills around the city for a day-hike or explore nearby wine villages by train.

General Advice

Brno is a welcoming city for both short stays and longer visits, with most main attractions located within walking distance or accessible via the dependable tram network. Try to purchase tram or bus tickets ahead at kiosks or newsstands (tickets are validated onboard). English is spoken in most tourist areas, though learning a few Czech phrases will always earn you an extra smile. Accommodations range from boutique hotels to friendly hostels and affordable apartments, making Brno a good value destination for most budgets.

Security & Safety

Brno is generally very safe, with low violent crime rates and a casual atmosphere even at night in the city center. As with any European city, keep an eye on your belongings, particularly in crowded places like public transport, markets, and festivals where pickpockets can operate. Take only registered taxis or use ride-hailing apps, and check your change when paying in cash. If walking late at night, stick to well-lit paths and main streets.

Travel Tips

  • Buy public transport tickets before boarding and validate them onboard
  • If visiting Villa Tugendhat, book tickets weeks in advance due to strict daily limits
  • Cafés often double as excellent breakfast spots, but brunch is popular and sometimes busy on weekends
  • Many museums and attractions are closed on Mondays
  • Carry some cash; smaller shops and kiosks may not accept cards
  • Visit the Zelný trh market in the morning for fresh produce and local specialties
  • Consider using Brno as a base to explore Moravian wine country by train or bike
  • Tipping in restaurants is appreciated (around 10%) but not obligatory

Really enjoyed my time in Brno. The streets feel lively but never overwhelming, and Špilberk Castle at sunset was magical. My only issue was finding English menus in a few local places, but most staff were patient and helpful.

Brno has amazing energy, especially in the evenings. We hopped between wine bars and quirky cafés, then spent hours walking through the old town. Loved the student vibe and how friendly everyone was.

Took the kids to the Technical Museum and the labyrinth under the market, both were hits! Trams made it so easy to get around. Wish we had time to take a wine tour outside the city.

Came for the Christmas markets and was pleasantly surprised by how cozy Brno felt compared to Prague. Mulled wine in the main square was excellent, but it was quite chilly. Bring gloves if you come in winter!

Went to see Villa Tugendhat—it was totally worth booking ahead. Also, walking up Petrov Hill for views of the cathedral was a highlight. The food scene surprised me, lots of vegetarian options too.

My friends and I did a road trip across the Czech Republic and stopped in Brno for two days. The nightlife is fantastic—lots of outdoor bars and live music. The public toilets downtown could be cleaner though.

Nice city, good mix of old and new. Maybe a bit quiet compared to bigger cities, and the weather was rainy when I was there. Still, the Moravian Gallery had a great exhibition and food prices were fair.

Had no expectations for Brno but ended up loving it. The ossuary was haunting and beautiful, and local cafés had some of the best pastries I've tried. Can't wait to come back in the summer.

The underground labyrinth is really different from anything I’ve done in Europe. Brno’s food markets were a delight each morning. I wish there were more English-language tours available though.

One of my favorite cities in Central Europe! People are really open and the café culture here is just great for digital nomads. Try the cakes at Cafe Momenta.
