About Caye Caulker, Belize

4.4 (20 reviews)
Caye Caulker is a tranquil, palm-dotted island just off the coast of Belize, beloved for its vibrant Caribbean atmosphere and relaxed vibe. Small enough to explore by foot or bicycle, the island invites travelers to adopt its unofficial motto, 'Go Slow.' With turquoise waters as far as the eye can see, it’s a haven for anyone seeking a laid-back escape with plenty of sunshine, sea, and sand.

The main draw here is unquestionably the barrier reef just offshore, part of the second largest reef system in the world. Snorkeling and diving trips take visitors to spots like Hol Chan Marine Reserve and the famous Blue Hole, where rich marine life—think nurse sharks, stingrays, and colorful corals—await beneath the surface. The island’s Split, where a hurricane divided the island into two, is now a lively hangout for swimming, sunbathing, and enjoying reggae tunes with a drink in hand.

Life on Caye Caulker is relaxed and unhurried. Colorful wooden cabanas, beach bars, and seafood shacks line the sandy streets, and the locals are as friendly as the weather is warm. Visitors often mingle at local joints along Front Street or try the freshly caught lobster when in season. The pace shifts down into island time, and no one is ever in a rush.

Getting around Caye Caulker is easy—no cars, just golf carts and bikes. Accommodations range from rustic beachside cabanas to cozy guesthouses and a few boutique hotels. Dining is a pleasure, with fresh seafood a must-try. Travelers can take day trips for fishing, kayaking, or paddleboarding, while sunset sails cap off perfect days with epic views.

Caye Caulker is sunny most of the year, but the best weather is generally from late November to April. Off-peak travel means fewer crowds and cheaper rates but also the chance of rain. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, bug spray, and a spirit for adventure—or relaxation, depending on your mood.

General Advice

Caye Caulker is a perfect destination for travelers looking to truly unwind and escape the hustle of everyday life. Pack light, embrace the casual dress code, and prepare for plenty of barefoot days by the water. Most activities revolve around the sea, so plan to spend lots of time snorkeling, swimming, or just lounging beachside. If you’re hoping for adventure tours, book ahead in high season as they can fill up fast. Expect limited ATMs, so bring enough cash, and make reservations for popular restaurants if visiting during Lobster Fest or peak times.

Security & Safety

Caye Caulker is generally extremely safe, but it’s wise to use typical travel common sense. Don’t leave valuables unattended on the beach or in unlocked golf carts. Streets are well-lit and locals are helpful, but avoid walking alone on the less busy beaches at night. Stay aware of your belongings, especially during festivals or crowded social events, and always lock your accommodation. Watch out for strong sun, dehydration, and take care when swimming or snorkeling outside guided excursions.

Travel Tips

  • Pack light, casual clothes and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Bring cash as ATMs can be limited and some places are cash-only.
  • Rent a bike or golf cart for quick island transport.
  • Book snorkeling and diving tours in advance during high season.
  • Respect local wildlife and don’t touch coral or marine animals.
  • Try local lobster and ceviche at small eateries.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated in the heat.
  • Wi-Fi is available but can be slow; download maps in advance.

Caye Caulker was such a chill break from the busy world. I loved biking along sandy streets and grabbing fresh lobster tacos by the Split. The snorkeling trip to Hol Chan was the highlight. Would have loved a few more café options though.

Amazing place to relax! The water is unreal and everyone is super friendly. We did a sunset sail, swam at the Split, and met awesome people at the Lazy Lizard. Can't wait to come back next year.

My family enjoyed snorkeling—saw sharks, rays, and tons of fish. The island is small but full of character. Nights are lively but never too wild. Only complaint: the mosquitoes were a bit much after dark.

As a solo traveler, this place felt really safe and welcoming. I met lots of backpackers at my hostel and we kayaked out to the mangroves. Everything moves at a slower pace, which was nice. Bring cash—ATMs ran out one day.

From the moment I got off the water taxi, I felt like I was on island time. Loved chatting with local artists and eating grilled snapper every night. Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a must for snorkeling. Would recommend it for couples and friends.

The vibe is super laid-back but it was really hot and humid in August. Not everything was open during low season, so next time I’ll come earlier in the year. Still, swimming at the Split every day was great fun.

This was our favorite stop in Belize. We saw manatees on a boat tour and ate delicious conch fritters. The tiny size makes it easy to chill and meet people. Wish there were a few more shaded areas on the beach.

Great for unplugging and playing in the water all day. The Split is basically the social spot for everyone. I liked how everything is walkable, but it can be a little crowded when cruise folks come by. Still highly recommended.

My partner and I had an awesome time! We did a Blue Hole dive, which blew us away. Nights were spent trying local rum and making new friends at beachfront bars. It's laid-back but with enough to do if you want adventure.

We came with our kids and they had a blast snorkeling and feeding tarpon near the docks. Beaches are small but the water is perfect for swimming. Bring bug spray for the evenings!

If you want to wind down completely, this is your spot. There isn’t much in terms of fancy resorts, but simple cabanas right on the water made it special. Our bike rentals were the best way to see everything.

Super friendly locals and everything’s stress-free here. Kayaking through the mangroves was peaceful. A few rainy days but the bars have board games and good music to kill time.

Loved how everyone uses golf carts to get around! The ceviche and grilled lobster were the best meals I’ve had in ages. We caught a tiny local music festival one night—so much fun.

Simple, sunny, and slow-paced. If you’re expecting luxury, look elsewhere. Perfect for unwinding and people watching. Don’t skip the sunset cruise—they’re really gorgeous.

I joined a fishing tour and caught my own dinner—can’t beat that. The marine life here is crazy colorful. Wi-fi can be spotty but honestly, disconnecting felt good.

The island was cute but much busier than I expected with lots of daytrippers. Still, friendly people and I enjoyed paddleboarding around the coast. Accommodation options can fill up fast so book early.

The whole island feels like summer vacation, every day. We caught a movie night at an outdoor bar and watched the sunset with our toes in the water. Loved every minute!

Beautiful reefs and friendly people! Ate way too much seafood. Ny only tip for future travelers: bring plenty of cash because some restaurants wouldn’t take cards. Otherwise, perfect easygoing days.
