About Nara, Japan

4.4 (20 reviews)
Nara, Japan's first permanent capital, is an atmospheric city embedded with centuries-old temples, vibrant gardens, and a strong connection to nature. Known for its friendly free-roaming deer and heritage sites dating back to the 8th century, Nara offers a quieter, more reflective slice of Japanese culture compared to its nearby neighbors, Kyoto and Osaka. Visitors come seeking the tranquil beauty of its parks and UNESCO World Heritage Sites that are scattered gracefully throughout the city.

Attractions in Nara range from the imposing Todai-ji Temple, housing the colossal Great Buddha statue, to the Kasuga Taisha Shrine adorned with hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns. Strolling through Nara Park, you'll encounter herds of tame deer, considered sacred messengers, as well as shimmering ponds and views of forested hills. The city also boasts the Nara National Museum, which displays extraordinary Buddhist art and treasures, and Kofuku-ji Temple, with its dramatic five-story pagoda.

Culturally, Nara feels peaceful and timeless. The center is easy to explore on foot or by bicycle, and local markets and quaint shopping streets offer a taste of regional crafts and flavors. You'll find stalls selling kakinoha sushi (sushi wrapped in persimmon leaves) and sweet mochi treats, alongside traditional tea houses and small eateries. Despite its deep historical roots, Nara remains a welcoming and manageable destination ideal for a day trip or a longer stay.

Getting to Nara is straightforward, with frequent trains from both Kyoto and Osaka making access easy. Accommodations range from classic ryokan inns to modern hotels, catering to different budgets. Spring and autumn are especially pleasant times to visit, with cherry blossoms and autumn foliage adding seasonal color. Plan to arrive early to beat tour groups and enjoy the temples and parks in a calm morning light.

General Advice

Nara makes for a rewarding visit whether you have a day or want to linger longer. It's especially suited to slow exploration—you can comfortably see most of the key highlights on foot or by bicycle. Many attractions are within walking distance of JR Nara or Kintetsu Nara train stations, so public transport is rarely required once you arrive. If planning to visit popular temples or interact with the deer, start early in the morning to experience the peaceful ambiance before crowds arrive. Bring cash, as some small vendors might not accept credit cards.

Security & Safety

Nara is generally a very safe city, both day and night, with low crime rates and a friendly atmosphere. Beware, however, of the deer, especially around Nara Park—they may become aggressive if you attempt to withhold or tease them with food. Always store your belongings securely, as the deer are known to nibble at bags or maps looking for snacks. Be cautious crossing roads since many attractions are located near busy streets.

Travel Tips

  • Purchase deer crackers (shika senbei) from official vendors, not outside food, to feed the deer.
  • Wear comfortable walking shoes—paths in the park and temple areas can be uneven.
  • Pick up a city map at the tourist information center in the train station.
  • Carry a reusable water bottle, as vending machines and restrooms are widely available.
  • Try to visit major sights like Todai-ji early in the day for fewer crowds.
  • Bring a small bag or pouch for coins, as you'll need them at temple admission booths.
  • Use lockers at train stations to store luggage if making a day trip.
  • Sample Nara's local specialties at small restaurants or food stalls near Nara Park.

We spent a whole day in Nara and still wished we had more time! Todai-ji and the Great Buddha absolutely lived up to the hype. The deer were fun (if a bit cheeky), and our kids loved feeding them. It did get crowded after lunchtime, so I'd suggest arriving early.

Coming during cherry blossom season was magical. The temples looked stunning and the parks were full of gentle pink colors. We enjoyed wandering the old streets and sampling the persimmon-leaf sushi. Nara felt both historic and very relaxed.

I made a quick trip over from Osaka and I'm so glad I did. The deer are everywhere—it’s really unique. I spent hours in the gardens and loved the art at the Nara National Museum. Some places close early, so plan your day.

A peaceful spot for anyone interested in Japanese history. We toured so many shrines and pagodas, and I took way too many deer photos. My only complaint is that a few souvenir shops felt overpriced, but otherwise a great experience.

Absolutely loved the calming atmosphere of Nara. The people were welcoming and the food scene was delightful. We rented bikes and it made getting around super easy, especially between shrines and gardens. Would come back in a heartbeat.

Nara Park was bigger than I expected! Saw so many deer and had a great view of the city from the hills. It was chilly and some parts felt a little deserted in winter, but the temples were still impressive.

Used Nara as a day trip from Kyoto. The highlight for me was Kasuga Taisha and all the lanterns. It’s very walkable. If you’re into Buddhist history or cute animals, this place is perfect.

We were a group of four and all loved our time in Nara. The Great Buddha is spectacular. Found a cozy little tea house with matcha parfait after exploring. Summer was a bit humid, but worth it for the green scenery.

Went early and got to see the deer in the park before it got crowded—they really come up close! The gardens and ponds are so peaceful. Only downside was a few construction works near one of the shrines.

Nara is definitely worth more than a quick stop. I liked learning about Japanese culture at the museum and walking the quiet backstreets. I did feel like some restaurants had long waits, but the food was great once we got in.

Such a peaceful city. The five-story pagoda was a real landmark and the autumn leaves were gorgeous. We did a kimono rental which made for lovely photos around the shrines. Only issue was navigating the train station exits, but locals were happy to help.

The history and temples are top-notch, though it was very hot and a bit tiring to walk everywhere. Deer are cute but can be aggressive when they want food! Still an essential stop if you’re near Osaka.

I traveled solo and felt totally safe. Sat by the ponds sketching and people-watching. Wish there were more English-language signs in some of the smaller temples, but it was no major problem.

A highlight of my trip to Japan! The deer were unexpectedly funny and the main temple is breathtaking. I spent most of my time near Naramachi and found excellent traditional sweets. Highly recommend visiting.

Perfect place for a family outing. My kids kept chasing after the deer and we loved all the ancient architecture. There were plenty of picnic spots, though we did get caught in a sudden spring rain shower!

Nara left a deep impression on me. The temples feel unlike anywhere else and the streets are quiet in the evening. I wish I'd stayed overnight instead of just a day.

Came here as a stop between Tokyo and Kyoto. Nara has a laid-back pace and lots of shade in the summer. The deer can pester you for food, so keep your snacks tucked away!

Went with a tour group and was blown away by the scale of Todai-ji and the kindness of locals. Even in winter, the gardens were beautiful. Loved the mochi from a small stand near the park.

Great spot to slow down and escape city crowds. The main street had plenty of nice cafes and the museums were top quality. Would recommend at least a two-day visit if you can.
