About Surabaya, Indonesia

4.3 (20 reviews)
Surabaya, Indonesia’s second-largest city, pulses with a distinct charm shaped by its rich heritage, dynamic markets, and forward-looking spirit. Located on the eastern side of Java, Surabaya serves as a bustling commercial hub while preserving its colonial architecture and maritime legacy. It’s a city where history and progress collide, making it both a fascinating destination for cultural explorers and a launchpad to the neighboring islands of East Java.

Landmarks such as the evocative Heroes Monument and the historic House of Sampoerna provide insight into Indonesia’s struggle for independence and the city’s role in shaping national identity. The colorful Kampung Arab and Chinatown districts invite visitors to wander through narrow, atmospheric streets lined with mosques, temples, and traditional shops. Spend time strolling along Tunjungan Street with its art deco buildings, or unwind in lush city parks like Taman Bungkul, a favorite local hangout.

Life in Surabaya is deeply intertwined with food and culture; from aromatic street-side satay stalls to seafood feasts in seaside enclaves like Kenjeran Beach. The city’s markets—especially Pasar Atom and Pasar Pabean—overflow with everything from batik to exotic fruits. While Surabaya doesn’t possess Bali’s beach reputation, its local vibe, historical quarters, and energetic nightlife draw in both Indonesian and international visitors looking for a slice of authentic urban Java.

Getting around is convenient thanks to the city’s modern buses, ample taxis, and the growing availability of rideshare apps. Hotels range from luxury high-rises in the city center to budget guesthouses near key attractions. For dining, you’ll find everything from spicy East Javanese delicacies to international fare and trendy cafés. The city is generally humid year-round; for the most comfortable experience, plan your visit during the dry season between May and October.

General Advice

Surabaya is an energetic city best enjoyed by embracing its pace and taking time to explore its neighborhoods on foot or by using local transportation. English is spoken at some hotels and tourist centers, but learning a few basic Indonesian phrases goes a long way. Dress modestly, especially when visiting mosques or more traditional areas, and be ready to experience both the city’s modern conveniences and its bustling, sometimes chaotic, street life.

Security & Safety

Surabaya is generally safe for tourists, but as in any busy urban destination, be cautious with your belongings in crowded spaces and markets. Watch out for pickpockets, especially in busy areas and on public transport. At night, stick to well-lit streets or use reputable taxi or rideshare services. It's wise to carry identification, avoid displaying valuables openly, and drink bottled water to prevent stomach issues.

Travel Tips

  • Wear light, breathable clothing as Surabaya is hot and humid most of the year.
  • Use ride-hailing apps like Gojek or Grab for easy, affordable transportation.
  • Carry small cash for markets and smaller eateries.
  • Buy a local SIM card for convenient internet access.
  • Stick to bottled water and avoid ice at street stalls.
  • Friday afternoons and weekends get busy; plan accordingly for crowds.
  • Try famous Surabayan dishes like rawon (beef soup) and lontong balap.
  • Book accommodation near Tunjungan or the city center for easy access to attractions.

Spent four days in Surabaya on my way to Bromo. The House of Sampoerna was fascinating, and I ended up buying quirky souvenirs at Pasar Atom. Traffic was hectic in the evenings but local food made it worth it. Try the rawon – it was delicious!

I was in Surabaya for a business trip but had time to wander down Tunjungan Street. The colonial buildings are cool and there’s plenty of good coffee everywhere. It’s not as touristy as Jakarta or Bali, which I liked. Would visit again if I’m in Java.

Surabaya was vibrant and friendly! I loved the energy at Taman Bungkul where families gathered every evening. We explored Chinatown and Arab Quarter – so much history and the street snacks were out of this world. Perfect stop before heading east.

Kenjeran Beach was great for a quiet stroll in the evening. The city surprised me with its mix of modern malls and traditional markets. I found the Suramadu Bridge lit up at night really beautiful. The humidity was intense, but overall a cool place.

Came with my family for three nights. The Heroes Monument was impressive, though the museum info could be a bit better in English. Street food was a highlight – my teenagers loved the sate ayam. Would recommend for anyone into history and culture.

I was there for a conference, and managed to fit in some sightseeing. Really liked the atmosphere in the Arab Quarter and the market vibes at Pasar Pabean. The city gets busy but the locals are very helpful. Noisy at night near our hotel though.

Surabaya is an interesting city, but it’s quite spread out and sometimes hard to get around during rush hour. The House of Sampoerna tour was excellent. Found it hard to find vegetarian food options, but the coffee shops were really fun to hang out in.

Enjoyed Surabaya’s art deco buildings and the lively vibe at Tunjungan. We ate at a warung near our hotel almost every night—super cheap and tasty. We got caught in a rainstorm so always carry an umbrella. People were generally warm and curious.

Great place for urban explorers! I really enjoyed the mix of old and new architecture. Food markets were busy and fun to browse. Air pollution can be noticeable at times, but the sights and experiences outweigh that.

Traveling solo in Surabaya was no problem—very safe and easy to navigate with Gojek. The local markets are a must-visit. Kenjeran Beach isn’t for sunbathing, but it’s scenic and peaceful. Prices are low compared to other Southeast Asian cities.

Our group of friends spent a week exploring Surabaya’s neighborhoods. The Sampoerna cigarette museum was a weirdly interesting stop. Food choices blew us away, especially the spicy sambal! Public transport is improving but still a bit limited.

Good base if you’re heading to East Java’s volcanoes. I enjoyed early morning walks in Taman Bungkul and evenings in lively cafés. Not the prettiest city but definitely full of local character. Worth a stopover.

Surabaya has so much to offer beyond its business face. The Arab Quarter was fascinating, and the traditional batik shops are perfect for unique gifts. Prepare for heavy traffic but the city’s diversity makes up for it.

Interesting city with a lot happening, but I struggled with the humidity and traffic jams. Sushi restaurants and local warungs both impressed me. The city isn’t for everyone, but I found the urban culture unique.
