About Xi’an, China

4.4 (20 reviews)
Xi’an is one of China’s oldest cities and stands as a testament to the country's deep and varied history. Once the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and the capital for several powerful dynasties, Xi’an is best known as the home of the legendary Terracotta Army. This city blends layers of fascinating antiquity with modern Chinese culture, making it an essential stop for travelers seeking to understand the roots of Chinese civilization.

A walk along the imposing Xi’an City Wall provides sweeping views and a sense of the city’s once strategic might, while the Muslim Quarter bustles with street food, lively markets, and mingling scents of spices. The awe-inspiring Terracotta Warriors Museum draws visitors from around the world who come to marvel at thousands of life-sized soldiers unearthed after two millennia. Other highlights include climbing the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda or exploring the vibrant drum and bell towers anchoring the old cities’ core.

Life in Xi’an feels energetic yet grounded, with locals practicing tai chi in leafy parks and students cycling ancient lanes. There’s a palpable pride in the city’s Sinitic heritage, mixed with Central Asian influences from centuries of Silk Road trade. The culinary scene is a delight—savor hand-pulled yangrou paomo (lamb soup with crumbled bread) or sample tangy biangbiang noodles. Lodging ranges from budget hostels near the Muslim Quarter to comfortable mid-range and luxury hotels within the city walls.

The best times to visit are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) when temperatures are mild and the air is pleasant. Winters can be cold but less crowded, while summers get hot and busy. For a more immersive experience, join a food tour or rent a bike to circle the ancient walls at sunset for unforgettable city views.

Security & Safety

Xi’an is generally safe for tourists, but crowded areas like the Muslim Quarter and major attractions can attract pickpockets. Keep your valuables secured and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. Watch out for common travel scams around popular tourist spots.

Xi’an completely exceeded my expectations. The Terracotta Army is even more impressive in person, and the city wall bike ride was such a fun way to see the skyline. I ate way too many dumplings in the Muslim Quarter but have no regrets. Would absolutely come back!

Traveled solo for the history but stayed for the street food! Yangrou paomo is my new favorite comfort food. Some of the signage was tricky to navigate, but locals were helpful and friendly throughout my stay.

Came with my parents and we were all impressed by the mix of old and new. The museums are fascinating, but the city center gets pretty crowded around lunchtime. Definitely worth taking a guided tour for the Terracotta Warriors.

The drum and bell towers are beautiful, especially when they light up after dark. Stayed near the city wall—super convenient to reach the metro and major sites. Only downside: some attractions felt a bit commercialized.

We had fun biking the city wall but wish we had booked earlier because bikes sold out quickly. Food was a highlight, especially the noodles. Public transportation is easy once you get the hang of it.

The Terracotta Army was the main reason for my visit and totally delivered. Other sites like the pagodas were peaceful. Some areas are quite touristy, but it’s easy to find quiet corners if you explore a bit.

Took a dumpling-making class and learned so much! We also enjoyed a bike tour around the wall. Restaurants near the Muslim Quarter get crowded so go early if you want a seat.

Interesting city with a lot of character. Museums were packed with tour groups and sometimes it was hard to enjoy at my own pace. Still, the food and architecture made the trip worthwhile.

Fascinating city, but the air pollution was a problem on some days. Really enjoyed the history museums and local seafood dishes. Taxis were sometimes hard to catch during rush hour.
