About Baku, Azerbaijan

4.4 (20 reviews)
Baku, the vibrant capital of Azerbaijan, sprawls along the sparkling Caspian Sea with an eclectic blend of medieval ramparts and ultra-modern architecture. The city’s Old Town, or Icherisheher, is a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring winding alleyways, centuries-old mosques and caravanserais, and the iconic Maiden Tower. In stark contrast, the city’s skyline is dominated by glass-and-steel marvels like the Flame Towers, symbolizing Baku’s bold embrace of the future. What makes Baku truly unique is how effortlessly it weaves together its heritage as a Silk Road port with its cutting-edge urban style and lively cultural scene.

The city is a treasure trove for explorers keen on history and culture. Visitors flock to the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a medieval royal complex, as well as the elegant boulevards and lush parks lining the Caspian promenade. The contemporary Heydar Aliyev Center, designed by Zaha Hadid, is a sight in itself with its swooping curves and immersive exhibitions on Azerbaijani culture. Don’t miss strolling along Nizami Street for a taste of the latest trends, buzzing shops, and hidden teahouses. Just outside the city, the ancient petroglyphs of Gobustan and the surreal mud volcanoes offer an easy day trip for nature lovers and history buffs alike.

Baku pulses with a distinct energy, especially in the evenings when locals and travelers gather in stylish cafes, rooftop bars, and lively plazas. The city’s cuisine is a highlight: indulge in fragrant saffron rice, succulent kebabs, and fresh seafood pulled from the Caspian. Check out the bustling Taza Bazaar for spices and sweets, or sample modern takes on Azerbaijani dishes in upmarket restaurants. Throughout the year, Baku hosts festivals, jazz concerts, and sporting events, making every visit feel dynamic and full of possibility.

Getting around is straightforward thanks to a reliable metro system, plentiful taxis, and well-maintained pedestrian areas. Accommodations range from restored boutique hotels in the Old Town to international luxury chains and budget-friendly guesthouses. English is increasingly spoken in tourist areas, but learning a few basic Azerbaijani or Russian phrases can enhance your experience. Dining is diverse and affordable, with everything from local street food to international cuisine readily available.

The best time to visit Baku is from April to June and September to early November when the weather is pleasant and the city feels festive without being overwhelmingly crowded. Summer months can be hot and windy, while winter brings a more subdued charm. Dress smartly, as locals tend to appreciate style, and always plan some time to escape the city for the beaches or wild landscapes to get a broader taste of Azerbaijan.

General Advice

Baku is an extremely walkable and welcoming city for international visitors, with a cosmopolitan vibe that blends traditional Azerbaijani hospitality and an emerging arts scene. Public transport is efficient and affordable, and many of the city’s top sites are located within easy reach of each other. While Baku is generally safe and open to travelers, always respect local customs, particularly when visiting religious sites or older neighborhoods. Take some time to explore less touristy neighborhoods and sample authentic local foods from street vendors and family-run restaurants.

Security & Safety

Crime against tourists is relatively rare, but exercise standard caution as you would in any major city. Keep your personal belongings secure, especially in crowded areas like bazaars, public transport, and nightlife districts. Avoid walking alone late at night in unfamiliar neighborhoods, and be wary of unsolicited offers from strangers. It’s always a good idea to use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps, and keep copies of your important documents separate from the originals.

Travel Tips

  • The BakuCard offers discounts and free access to key attractions and public transport.
  • Cash and cards are both widely accepted, but always carry some small change for markets and taxis.
  • Taxis are plentiful but not all are metered; clarify the price before starting your trip or use ride-hailing apps.
  • Dress modestly in religious or traditional sites, but casual wear is fine elsewhere.
  • Tap water is generally safe for brushing teeth, but bottled water is recommended for drinking.
  • Electrical outlets use European-style two-pin plugs (220V).
  • English is spoken in major tourist spots, but learning a few Azerbaijani greetings is appreciated.
  • Friday and Saturday nights are busiest in cafes and bars; book ahead for popular venues.

We loved wandering through the Old City’s narrow streets and stopping for tea in one of the old caravanserais. The Flame Towers at night were pretty impressive. Just wish the weather hadn’t been so hot in the afternoons, but it was easy to find shade by the sea.

The blend of ancient and ultra-modern really stood out to me. I spent hours in the Heydar Aliyev Center, and the architecture all over the city was stunning. Some areas felt touristy, but most locals were friendly and helpful when I got lost.

Baku impressed us with its food—especially the plov and kebabs. Walking along the waterfront in the evening was a treat. The museums are great, though opening times are a bit sporadic so plan ahead.

The winter atmosphere in Baku was cozy, and we visited loads of cafes trying tea and pastries. Not everything was open, but there were no crowds, and we enjoyed the pace. Definitely try the local sweets!

I came for the Formula 1 race and ended up staying to explore more. Fantastic nightlife—Nizami Street was hopping even on weekdays. Taxis are a bit inconsistent, so stick to apps if you can.

The Gobustan Petroglyphs were a highlight, really worth the short trip out of the city. Some signage could be better for English speakers, but the locals were always happy to help. Old Town is charming.

Baku has this stylish energy—modern but so rooted in its past. The markets were full of color, and we snagged some lovely scarves as souvenirs. The whole city felt very safe, even at night.

Got to experience both the ancient side and the glitzy new developments. Fountain Square was my go-to spot for coffee. Only issue was a few pushy taxi drivers, so I’d recommend using Bolt for rides.

Traveling solo, I felt comfortable everywhere and met some amazing people at a jazz club. The seaside promenade is gorgeous for morning runs. I wish I’d had time to see more outside the city.

Baku in summer is lively, but it does get really windy some days, so bring a light jacket. Food portions are generous, and I loved sampling the shekerbura. Lots of construction going on, but still easy to get around.

We took a guided walking tour through Icherisheher and learned so much. The Palace of the Shirvanshahs was fascinating. Locals were happy to chat even if my Azerbaijani is non-existent!

The museums were top-notch, especially the Carpet Museum. English info was a bit limited, but audio guides helped a lot. I enjoyed relaxing in the parks, too.

Visited in winter and was surprised how walkable everything was. The nightlife is low-key but fun in the center. Some attractions had short winter hours, but it meant more relaxed exploring.

Stunning city! We went up the Funicular for a great view of the Flame Towers and the Caspian. The metro made it easy to hop between major spots. Would go back again for sure.

Loved the historical sites, but parts of the city get really busy in the evenings. Some places were under renovation, but it’s clear the city is evolving. Try out local pomegranate juice, it’s everywhere!

The contrast between the old and new in Baku is striking. Enjoyed the art galleries and trying out local caviar. A little tricky to find vegetarian meals at some places, but overall highly recommend.
