About Medellín, Colombia

4.4 (20 reviews)
Medellín is a city where breathtaking mountain landscapes meet the energy of modern urban life. Known as the ‘City of Eternal Spring’ for its pleasant year-round climate, Medellín has rapidly transformed from a tumultuous past into one of South America's most exciting destinations. Visitors are drawn by its flower-filled parks, creative public spaces, and an infectious sense of optimism that infuses the city.

The city’s attractions are diverse, ranging from the colorful houses of Comuna 13—famous for its street art and innovative escalators—to the lush Medellín Botanical Garden and the interactive Museo de Antioquia, home to many original works by native artist Fernando Botero. Taking the Metrocable up to Parque Arví provides sweeping views of the Aburrá Valley and a taste of Andean nature. Nightlife pulses through El Poblado and Laureles, where people savor Colombian coffee by day and dance salsa by night.

Medellín’s streets are alive with culture, music, and local energy. The people (Paisas) are famously welcoming, always eager to share their city’s history and transformation. Outdoor cafes line the boulevards, and markets overflow with tropical fruit. The annual Feria de las Flores (Flower Festival) in August brings the city together for parades and celebrations, while the innovative use of public art and transportation continues to win global recognition.

Getting around Medellín is a breeze thanks to the city’s excellent metro system, integrated cable cars, and inexpensive taxis. Accommodation suits all budgets, from trendy hostels in El Poblado to boutique hotels in Laureles. Dining is a highlight: sample the iconic bandeja paisa, sip locally grown coffee, and check out rooftop restaurants with valley views.

The best time to visit is during the dry season (December-March and June-August), but Medellín’s mild weather makes it enjoyable almost any time of year. Be sure to pack for both urban adventures and hikes in the surrounding hills. Budget-conscious travelers will find Medellín affordable, and there are daily flights from major Colombian and international cities.

General Advice

Medellín is ideal for travelers seeking a blend of culture, city life, and natural beauty. Brush up on your Spanish; while locals are friendly and helpful, English is not widely spoken outside tourist hubs. Use the efficient metro system for easy access to most neighborhoods and attractions. Expect lively crowds in areas like El Poblado, especially on weekends and during festivals. Embrace local customs and try traditional dishes for a richer experience.

Security & Safety

Medellín is much safer than it was in the past, but it's wise to stay alert, especially at night and in less touristy areas. Avoid flashing valuables, use authorized taxis or ride-sharing apps, and stick to well-lit streets. Be cautious in crowded places to avoid pickpockets, and ask locals or your hotel about neighborhoods to avoid after dark. Emergency numbers are 123 for police and ambulance.

Travel Tips

  • Stay in El Poblado or Laureles for convenience, safety, and nightlife.
  • Book tickets for popular attractions or tours in advance, especially during festival seasons.

I loved the mix of city life and green spaces. The Metrocable ride up to Parque Arví was a highlight, and the views are unreal. El Poblado got a bit loud at night, but it was so full of energy. Overall, one of my favorite stops in Colombia.

We visited during the Feria de las Flores and the whole city felt like a party. So much color and music! The Museo de Antioquia was a great way to cool off and learn about local art. Wish we’d had more time for day trips.

Medellín is really interesting but I found the traffic heavy during rush hour. That said, the public transport was efficient and took us everywhere we wanted to go. Plaza Botero is fun for people-watching and photos.

A great city for street photography. Comuna 13’s escalators were as cool as everyone says, and I got some amazing shots. My Spanish isn’t great, so it was tough ordering at small restaurants sometimes.

Took my two kids and they absolutely loved the Parque Explora. Super interactive, and even I learned something! We stayed in Laureles, which felt safe and was quieter than El Poblado. Metro made everything easy.

Medellín’s nightlife is something else—salsa clubs, rooftop bars, you name it. I booked a coffee tasting and was blown away by the passion behind it. Would come back just for the music scene.

Took the Metrocable up for some hiking in Parque Arví—very refreshing to have nature so close to the city. The traffic and air quality were not always perfect, but the city’s charm made up for it.

First time in Colombia, and Medellín was a great starting point. The metro system is so clean, and locals offered help every time I looked lost. The altitude took a bit of getting used to however.

Loved the food, but some of the neighborhoods felt gritty. Saw amazing art and found great live music, but wish I’d planned my itinerary better—getting around outside the metro routes took time.

Had a wonderful time taking a street food tour. Everyone was friendly, and I never felt unsafe, though I kept my bag close in crowded markets. Don’t miss the rooftop bars in Poblado at sunset!

Medellín is such a lively city. Enjoyed the open air parks and Botero’s statues. If you love late-night food, this is the place—empanadas at 2 am after dancing is the norm.

Museum lovers will be happy here. Museo de Antioquia and Parque Explora were both fascinating. Traffic can be frustrating and some downtown areas felt hectic during the evening.

Our family felt welcomed everywhere. We used taxis and Uber at night just to be extra safe, and that worked out well. The journey to Guatapé was a perfect day trip—it’s worth it for the climb!
