About Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

4.4 (20 reviews)
Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, is home to one of the world’s most spectacular waterfalls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, or "The Smoke That Thunders." The sheer volume and force of water plunging over the mile-wide basalt cliff create a dramatic spectacle, accompanied by swirling mist visible for miles. This iconic natural wonder draws adventure seekers, nature lovers, and travelers eager to experience the raw energy of Africa in person.

Visitors can gaze at the falls from panoramic viewpoints, feeling the spray on their skin and hearing the roar up close. Beyond the main falls, the area offers a host of adrenaline-pumping activities such as bungee jumping from the Victoria Falls Bridge, thrilling white-water rafting on the Zambezi River, and scenic helicopter flights that reveal the scale and beauty of the landscape. For those who prefer a slower pace, walking trails wind through lush rainforest filled with unique plant life and colorful birds, with viewpoints like Danger Point and the Knife Edge Bridge offering prime photo spots.

The small town of Victoria Falls exudes a laid-back, welcoming vibe, with friendly locals eager to share their culture. Markets feature intricate Zimbabwean arts and crafts, while open-air restaurants and lodges provide the chance to savor local cuisine. The town serves as a convenient base, with everything from backpacker hostels to upscale hotels overlooking the Zambezi River, and a lively nightlife scene that often features traditional music and dance.

Getting around is easy on foot or by taxi. Many activities and sites are located close to the town center, though some game drives and river cruises require transfers arranged by local operators. Dining options range from casual cafes to fine-dining experiences with views of the river, all emphasizing fresh, local flavors. English is widely spoken, making communication straightforward for most visitors.

The best time to visit Victoria Falls is from February to May, when the water flow is at its most dramatic after the rainy season. However, visiting between June and August offers pleasant, cooler weather and great opportunities for wildlife viewing in nearby national parks. Booking popular tours and adventure activities in advance is recommended, especially during peak months.

General Advice

Victoria Falls is a fantastic destination for travelers of all ages, but plan ahead to make the most of your trip. Book popular adventure activities, safaris, and specialty excursions in advance, especially during peak travel months, as they can fill up quickly. Be prepared for wet conditions near the falls by wearing waterproof clothing or renting ponchos, and always protect your camera gear from the ubiquitous spray. Bring US dollars in small denominations for entry fees, tips, and market shopping, as credit card payment can be unreliable outside hotels and larger restaurants.

Security & Safety

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, is generally safe for tourists, but standard precautions apply. Avoid walking alone at night outside well-lit and busy areas, and secure valuables in your hotel safe. Use registered tour operators for all major activities, and only use official taxis or arranged transportation. Be cautious around wild animals both in and out of national parks, and never swim in the Zambezi River except in designated, guided locations. Watch out for touts and unofficial guides, and politely decline persistent offers.

Travel Tips

  • Carry waterproof clothing and dry bags to protect yourself and your valuables from the constant spray at the falls.
  • US dollars are widely accepted, but bring small notes and expect change in local currency.
  • Malaria is present in the region, so consult your doctor about prophylactic medication before traveling.
  • Don’t drink tap water—instead, use bottled or filtered water for drinking and brushing teeth.
  • Book adventure activities and safaris in advance, especially if traveling during holidays or high season.
  • Respect local customs and always ask before photographing people or religious sites.
  • Early morning and late afternoon are the best times for photography at the falls due to optimal lighting.
  • Double-check visa requirements for Zimbabwe before departing, as they can change and vary by nationality.

Victoria Falls was everything I hoped for. The walking paths gave breathtaking angles of the falls and I got totally soaked from the spray! We also did a sunset cruise which was so peaceful—managed to spot elephants right by the riverbank. Loved the vibe of the town, though it did get a bit touristy in some places.

Absolutely incredible! I went rafting on the Zambezi and it was honestly the most thrilling thing I've ever done. The falls are spellbinding and I could've stood watching the water all day. Only wish I'd booked more time for a safari.

Perfect destination for adventure and nature lovers. The helicopter ride over the falls is pricey but 100% worth it for the views. The local food was tasty, especially the grilled bream fish. Small tip: bring waterproof phone covers—the spray is intense!

Had a fantastic time exploring the rainforest trails and taking endless photos from Knife Edge Bridge. Really enjoyed the markets—picked up some unique carvings as souvenirs. I found the entry fees a bit higher than expected, but so worth it for the experience.

My partner and I celebrated our anniversary here and it was magical. We did the Devil’s Pool swim—scary but unforgettable! The staff at our lodge arranged everything for us, and being able to walk to the falls every morning was a dream.

Incredible site but very crowded around midday, which took away a bit of the magic for me. Early mornings were quieter and much nicer for exploring. Marketplace was great for gifts, but haggle a little on price. Views of the Zambezi from the bridge were phenomenal.

We came as a family with 2 kids and there was plenty for everyone. The wildlife drive in Zambezi National Park was a highlight—our guide spotted giraffes and buffalo for us! Definitely bring mosquito repellent, though. Would love to return in the wetter season to see the falls at full force.

The sheer force of the falls is unbelievable up close. I joined a walking tour and learned a lot about local history and geology. Some restaurants were a little expensive but the riverside views made up for it. Highly recommend the cultural village experience.

Did a microlight flight over the falls—it was both terrifying and amazing! Loved listening to the thunder of the water and seeing rainbows everywhere. The local guides were knowledgeable and so friendly. Can't recommend the sunset cruise enough.

We traveled with friends and really enjoyed the mix of adventure and relaxation. Our white-water rafting guide kept us laughing and safe. The craft market had so many cool things, though remember to carry cash. The only downside was the intense humidity.

Nature at its best! We saw rainbows over the falls and monkeys along the paths. Stayed at a riverside lodge and the staff were so attentive. There's a lot to do outside just the falls—loved the game drive and the local food scene.

As a Zimbabwean, showing my international friends Victoria Falls was a joy. The Walking Safaris were informative and the combination of nature and culture is unbeatable. They were wowed by the size and noise of the falls. Best way to experience Zimbabwe's wild heart.

Great variety of activities, though some were booked out, so plan ahead. Learned a lot about the local flora in the rainforest area. The town felt safe and easy to explore on foot. Nightlife was fun—live music at the lodge bar was a nice touch.

The falls are massive—photos don’t do them justice. I enjoyed biking through the town and taking a day trip to nearby Livingstone Island. Some tourist areas were crowded and expensive but the overall experience was worth every penny.

Our kids loved seeing zebras in the park and all the spray from the falls. We took the kids on a short cruise and they couldn't stop talking about the hippos! It gets very wet on the walkways, so pack dry clothes. Wishing we’d done the bungee jump!

Great spot for adventure. I bungee jumped from the bridge and survived! Enjoyed the local market shopping but food could've been more vegetarian-friendly. The Devil’s Pool looked fun but was closed that day due to high water.

Solo traveler here—I felt safe the whole time and found the local people really welcoming. Nights can get lively with lots of music and food to try. Would recommend bringing extra cash for those little unexpected expenses. The spray was heavier than I expected, so be prepared to get soaked.

Got so many great photos, especially with rainbows everywhere! The historic Victoria Falls Bridge tour was fun and informative. Wish there had been more affordable accommodation options during peak season, but everything else exceeded expectations.

Took a guided safari one afternoon and saw lions and elephants in their natural habitat—not far from the town at all. Food was delicious, with a lot of fresh options. Only trouble I had was with slow wifi at my lodge, but with scenery like this, who cares?
