About Harare, Zimbabwe

4.4 (20 reviews)
Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe, buzzes with urban life, creative energy, and a vibrant blend of cultures. Unlike many sprawling African metropolises, Harare feels surprisingly green and open, with tree-lined avenues and blooming jacarandas coloring the city’s streets in late spring. It serves as the political, economic, and cultural heart of Zimbabwe, making it the starting point for travelers eager to experience the soul of the nation.

The city is home to significant attractions that reveal the depth of its history and contemporary art scene. The National Gallery of Zimbabwe showcases some of southern Africa’s best modern artwork, while the iconic Mbare Musika market pulses with local life and an explosion of colors. Harare Gardens offers a peaceful green refuge right in the city center, and a guided trip out to the balancing rocks of Epworth gives visitors a taste of Zimbabwe’s geological wonders. From bustling crafts markets and roadside eateries to elegant colonial-era architecture, the city blends past and present in fascinating ways.

Daily life in Harare moves at a relaxed yet efficient pace, and you’ll encounter a population known for its friendliness and warmth. Open-air markets are the place to watch street performers, taste local cuisines, and haggle for unique handicrafts. The nightlife, especially in areas like Borrowdale and Avondale, features a wide range of bars, jazz clubs, and restaurants serving everything from samosas to peri-peri chicken.

Harare is easily explored by taxi or private hire, and most neighborhoods of interest are just a short drive apart. Accommodation options range from boutique hotels and comfortable guesthouses to international chains, and dining caters to all budgets. English is widely spoken, so travelers rarely have trouble communicating. Budget travelers will find affordable street food and hostels, while those seeking luxury can enjoy upscale hotels and fine dining.

The city is most welcoming from May to September when the weather is dry and mild, perfect for exploring on foot or venturing out for day trips. It’s worth joining a guided city tour early on to get your bearings and local dining tips. Visitors should carry small bills, try the fresh produce at the markets, and keep their cameras ready—the capital’s rhythms and colors make for fantastic travel photos.

General Advice

Harare is a dynamic city with plenty to discover for both first-timers and returning visitors. The city center is pedestrian-friendly, and taxis or ride-hailing apps are easy to use for moving between neighborhoods. While English is widely spoken, picking up a few greetings in Shona will earn you a smile. Spend time chatting with market vendors for great local recommendations—they’re often happy to share tips. Be sure to stay hydrated and wear sunblock if you’re exploring during the day, as the city sits over 1,400 meters above sea level and the sun can be intense.

Security & Safety

Harare is generally safe compared to other African capitals, but petty theft such as pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas or public markets. It’s best to leave valuables in your hotel safe, avoid walking alone at night, and always use registered taxis or ride-hailing services. Be cautious when handling cash and don’t display expensive electronics openly. As ATMs may not always be reliable, bring a small reserve of US dollars in cash, but keep most of it securely stored. Stay informed about local news and check with your hotel regarding any area-specific safety advice during your visit.

  • Always ask before taking photos at markets or of people

  • Bring a universal power adapter for electronics

I really liked the open feel of Harare compared to other big cities in Africa. The jacaranda trees were in full bloom and made the whole place look gorgeous. Really enjoyed talking with the artists at Chapungu Sculpture Park. Getting around was easy with local taxis, though traffic got busy on weekdays.
