About Zanzibar, Tanzania

4.4 (20 reviews)
Zanzibar, Tanzania is an exotic island destination renowned for its powdery white-sand beaches, sparkling turquoise waters, and enchanting heritage as a crossroads of Africa, Arabia, and Asia. This Indian Ocean archipelago has long lured travelers with its heady blend of historical intrigue, lush spice plantations, and laid-back coastal charm. Wandering through Stone Town’s labyrinthine alleys, visitors are instantly immersed in centuries-old Swahili culture and the echoes of sultans, traders, and explorers.

The island is home to some of East Africa’s most breathtaking beaches, such as Nungwi and Kendwa, where palm trees shade sun loungers and dhow boats drift by at sunset. Snorkeling and diving are spectacular around Mnemba Atoll and Chumbe Island, with coral reefs teeming with marine life. Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reveals ornate doorways, bustling bazaars, and landmarks like the House of Wonders and the Old Fort. Visitors can also venture inland to fragrant spice farms or take wildlife tours in Jozani Forest, home to rare red colobus monkeys.

Life moves at a languid pace in Zanzibar, and daily rhythms are shaped by the tides and the call to prayer. Local fish markets buzz with activity each morning, and evenings draw travelers to open-air food stalls serving Zanzibar pizza and grilled seafood. The island’s blend of African, Arab, and Indian influences is evident in its architecture, music, and cuisine, making every day a sensory adventure.

Travelers typically stay in Stone Town for history and nightlife or along the northern and eastern coasts for tranquil resorts and luxury lodges. Transportation is generally by taxi or private car, with dala-dala minibuses for the more adventurous. While Zanzibari cuisine is a highlight—don’t miss octopus curry and fresh tropical fruits—the island also has a range of international restaurants catering to all tastes and budgets.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the long, dry season, or December to February when it’s warm and mostly sunny. Pack light, breathable clothing, and be mindful of local customs, especially during Ramadan. Getting out early for popular sights or booking tours ahead can help you avoid crowds and secure the best experiences.

General Advice

Zanzibar rewards both the relaxed beach lover and the curious explorer. While enjoying the coastline is a must, set aside time for cultural encounters in Stone Town and on spice farms. Book accommodations in advance during high season and don’t hesitate to ask locals for advice—they’re typically friendly and eager to share recommendations. Respect local etiquette by dressing modestly especially in towns and villages, and be patient with a tropical pace that’s a world away from hurried city life.

Security & Safety

Zanzibar is generally considered safe for tourists, but petty theft does occur—especially in busy areas like Stone Town or crowded beaches. Keep valuables secured, use your hotel safe, and avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit or isolated areas. Be wary of unofficial tour guides, and only use registered taxis or arrange trusted transportation through your hotel. During excursions, especially on water, check that equipment and boats are in good condition and follow safety guidance from your operators.

Travel Tips

  • Pack light clothing and a light scarf or shawl for mosque visits or modest attire in town.
  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and insect repellent, as mosquitoes are common in the evenings.
  • Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory—round up taxi fares or leave 5-10% in restaurants.
  • Haggling is expected in markets, but keep it friendly and polite.
  • ATMs are mostly available in Stone Town; bring cash for remote areas and small purchases.
  • Tap water is not safe for drinking—stick to bottled or filtered water.
  • Electrical outlets are the UK-type (type G), so bring the appropriate adapter.
  • Consider booking tours and activities in advance during peak season (June-Oct, Dec-Jan).

Stone Town absolutely blew me away with its maze-like streets and historical feel. The seafood at Forodhani Gardens was the best I've ever had. We stayed near Nungwi beach—gorgeous water, but it did get pretty busy by mid-afternoon.

Our spice tour was so informative and colorful, but the roads to the plantation were pretty bumpy. Markets in Stone Town offered amazing souvenirs. Wish we had more days to relax on the northern beaches.

Family trip with two teens and everyone was happy—beach for them, history for me! We loved seeing the giant tortoises on Prison Island. Food was great, though some places took a while with orders.

Great diving experience with colorful reefs and friendly staff. Jozani Forest was humid but amazing to see the monkeys up close. It was a little pricey for food off the main strip, but overall worth it.

Christmas in Zanzibar felt so special! The festive music and local celebrations made it memorable. Stone Town was crowded with tourists, though, so we escaped to quieter spots for most of our stay.

The old town architecture was fascinating but I wasn't prepared for how hot it can get in the afternoons. Highly recommend guided tours for deeper history. Beach sunsets totally made up for the midday heat.

Great place for nature lovers. Spent a day hiking in the Jozani forest which was refreshing. The island’s public transport isn’t super reliable, so organize rides ahead where you can.

Went diving every day and was amazed at the marine life. Stone Town’s mix of cultures was so cool—definitely try the Zanzibari biryani. Mosquitoes were a minor nuisance at night, so pack good repellent.
