About Windhoek, Namibia

4.4 (20 reviews)
Windhoek, the lively capital of Namibia, blends modern conveniences with a distinctly African atmosphere, sitting comfortably between rolling hills and wide, sun-drenched plateaus. Its low-slung skyline dotted with German colonial architecture and bustling local markets captures a truly unique fusion of European history and African vibrance. Whether you’re arriving after a long journey across the Namibian desert or heading out to the country’s wildlife treasures, Windhoek serves as both a welcoming introduction and a final stop packed with energy.

The Christuskirche, with its striking sandstone and marble design, stands out among Windhoek’s landmarks, while the Independence Memorial Museum reveals the city’s layered past through immersive exhibits. Shoppers and foodies will enjoy navigating the craft-rich Post Street Mall or sampling local brews at the famous Windhoek Beer House. For touch points with Namibian culture, the vibrant Katutura township brims with life, music, and flavorful street food.

Daily life here balances cosmopolitan flair with easygoing Namibian hospitality. Cafés and restaurants serve everything from traditional biltong to international cuisine, and the city’s green spaces, like the lush Zoo Park, invite both locals and travelers to unwind. Windhoek’s manageable size makes it easy to explore on foot, but taxis and local buses are available for longer journeys. Lodging ranges from boutique guesthouses in leafy suburbs to sleek hotels in the CBD, all typically maintained to excellent standards.

The best time to visit is during the dry season between May and September, when days are warm and crisp, and wildlife excursions outside the city are most rewarding. Aim for a few days to enjoy Windhoek’s slower pace before diving into Namibia’s wilder landscapes—don’t miss a sundowner on a rooftop terrace as the city glows in the evening light.

General Advice

Windhoek is a friendly and practical starting point for travels in Namibia, offering a safe and comfortable place to acclimatize before venturing into the country’s remote regions. The city offers an engaging mix of culture, food, and history, and it’s easy to plan excursions or arrange transportation from here. Keep in mind that the pace is relaxed; shops may close early and some attractions aren’t open on Sundays, so check ahead when planning your activities.

Security & Safety

Windhoek is generally safer than many African capitals, but basic caution applies, especially at night. Stick to well-lit, central areas after dark, and avoid walking alone in quieter parts of the city. Keep valuables close, particularly in busy markets or while using taxis, and use official cabs or arranged transportation at night. Pickpocketing can happen in crowded areas, so remain alert with backpacks and mobile devices.

Travel Tips

  • English is widely spoken, but you’ll also hear German and Afrikaans.
  • Tap water is safe to drink in most places.
  • Carry cash; while cards are accepted in hotels and many restaurants, markets are usually cash-only.
  • Taxis don’t use meters—agree on a fare before you ride.
  • Days are hot but evenings cool off fast, so bring a jacket.
  • ATMs are easy to find downtown.
  • Consider booking accommodation in advance during public holidays.
  • Airport transfers take about 35–45 minutes due to the distance from city center.

Windhoek felt both relaxed and lively at the same time! We loved exploring the markets and tasting local food, especially the kapana in Katutura. Walking felt safe but we always took a taxi after dark. Would have liked a few more days just to try all the restaurants.

The mix of African and German influences was really interesting. Christuskirche is even more beautiful in person. Found great art at the Namibia Craft Centre and the people were very welcoming.

I stopped over for two nights before heading out on safari. Nice parks and some fun nightlife spots near the city center. The main downside was some shops closed early for the holidays.

Zoo Park was perfect for an afternoon break between museums. I found it easy to get around, though taxis did take some negotiation. The local beer at Joe’s Beerhouse is worth the trip!

Stopped here for a couple of days after Etosha. Good food and coffee, and a nice place to recover from the road. Not a ton happening at night on weekdays, but felt very safe overall.

Windhoek’s charm is understated. Some areas felt quiet in the evenings, and prices are higher than I expected for local crafts. Still, learning about Namibian history at the museum was a highlight.

My wife and I enjoyed the blend of modern cafes and old colonial architecture. Saw some cool local art. The only trouble was with ATMs, one of them wasn’t working but we found another.

Friendly people and such a calm vibe for a capital city. I loved eating at local restaurants and seeing the daily life in Zoo Park. Public transport is a bit tricky for non-locals but manageable with a map.

Clean, safe, and easy to get around. Highlights were the delicious German-Namibian bakeries and the unique mosaic fountains on Post Street. Don’t expect huge malls—it’s more about the atmosphere.

Interesting and different from other African capitals, but two days felt enough. Good museums but not a lot of nightlife during the week. Perfect as a base for trips outside the city.

Spent Christmas here and enjoyed the festive lights on Independence Avenue. Our hotel staff were so accommodating and helped us plan a trip to Daan Viljoen Game Reserve just outside the city.
