About Gondar, Ethiopia

4.3 (20 reviews)
Gondar, often called the 'Camelot of Africa,' is a city rich in history and culture, known for its stunning medieval castles, churches, and palaces. Located in the northern highlands of Ethiopia, Gondar was the imperial capital for centuries and is famous for its unique blend of Ethiopian, Portuguese, and Indian architectural influences. The city is surrounded by the scenic Simien Mountains, providing visitors with both urban intrigue and natural beauty.

One of Gondar's main draws is the Royal Enclosure, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that houses several castles and royal buildings built by Emperor Fasilides and his successors in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Debre Berhan Selassie Church, with its remarkable ceiling covered in angelic faces, is another must-see, representing some of the finest Ethiopian religious art. Tourists can also explore the ancient baths of Fasilides, which play a central role during the colorful Timkat (Epiphany) festival, when the pools are filled and crowds gather for religious ceremonies.

Gondar's atmosphere is lively yet laid-back, with bustling markets, friendly locals, and a strong sense of history in every street and square. You’ll find small cafes serving traditional Ethiopian fare and shops selling handicrafts and woven goods. The city also serves as a great base for adventurous travelers heading to the Simien Mountains National Park, famous for its dramatic peaks and unique wildlife like the gelada baboon.

Accommodations in Gondar range from simple guesthouses to boutique hotels, and taxis and tuk-tuks (three-wheeled vehicles) make getting around the city fairly easy. Most attractions are centrally located, but guided tours are recommended for in-depth historical context. Visitors should also sample local dishes like doro wat and freshly roasted coffee at neighborhood restaurants.

The best time to visit Gondar is during the dry season from October to April, especially around January’s Timkat festival for an unforgettable cultural experience. It’s wise to bring layers, as temperatures can fluctuate, and to book accommodations in advance during major festivals.

General Advice

Gondar is a welcoming city with a rich legacy and plenty to offer both casual sightseers and history enthusiasts. Take the time to hire a knowledgeable local guide for deeper insight at historical sites, and don't hesitate to interact with residents who are typically warm and eager to share their heritage. English is spoken in hotels and by most guides, but basic Amharic greetings are appreciated. Currency exchange is available at banks and major hotels, and cash is preferred in markets and small businesses.

Security & Safety

Gondar is generally considered safe for tourists, but like many destinations, it’s smart to stay aware of your surroundings, especially after dark or in less crowded areas. Petty theft can occur, so keep valuables secured and avoid displaying expensive items. Stick to established tour operators for trips to nearby mountains or rural sites. During busy festivals, watch your belongings closely and be cautious in crowded areas.

Gondar’s castles really blew me away—much more impressive in person than any pictures. Our guide was super passionate and told us loads of fascinating stories about the emperors. The only thing is the town gets a little busy during festival times, so book hotels in advance.

I went mainly for the Royal Enclosure and was not disappointed. The whole historic area has an almost fairy-tale feel, and the Debre Berhan Selassie Church is just stunning. Some areas felt a bit touristy, but overall, it was an unforgettable visit.

Loved how easy it was to see so many important sites in just a couple of days. We ate at a family-run restaurant near the main square where the coffee ceremony was a real highlight. Be sure to bring extra batteries for your camera—there’s so much to photograph.

We traveled as a family and both our teens and younger child enjoyed the castles. The local markets were fun for picking up scarves and baskets. Finding an ATM that actually worked was sometimes tricky, so plan ahead for cash.

The Simien Mountains are close enough for a day trip, which was perfect for our hiking-loving group. The air is crisp and the scenery spectacular. Gondar itself is charming and feels very authentic.

Beautiful architecture, though the rain in August made some of the roads muddy. Some sites needed a bit more maintenance, but the overall atmosphere and history were still totally worth it.

The Timkat festival was like nothing I’ve ever seen—so much energy and pageantry. I was happily swept up in all the excitement and even got some lovely photos of the priests in their colorful robes.

I appreciated the peaceful mornings—wandering early around the Royal Enclosure before it got busy was the best. Street food was good, but in the evenings things got a bit quiet outside the main areas.

Exploring the Jewish quarter added a whole new layer of depth to our trip. We met some artisans weaving traditional baskets, which made for unique souvenirs. Watch out for stray dogs around dusk, though.

We stayed at the Goha Hotel with an amazing view of the city. The sunsets from up there are spectacular. The walk up is steep, so consider taking a taxi if you’re not up for it.

Took my parents who love cultural sights, and we had a blast exploring castles and learning about Ethiopian emperors. The city has a vibrant local life and incredible art. Not as many English signs as I expected, but guides are easy to find.

Gondar’s food scene is underrated—don’t miss places serving shiro and lamb dishes. People are always ready to help with directions. If you travel during a national holiday, expect lots of crowds.

We used Gondar as a base for trekking in the Simien Mountains. The contrast between the medieval city and the wild landscapes was really cool. There’s not a huge nightlife, but perfect if you’re out exploring all day.

As a solo female traveler, I felt comfortable and welcomed. Hired a local guide for a day which made navigating historical sites easier. Road conditions vary a lot, so pack comfortable walking shoes.

The history was interesting but a few sites had scaffolding up, which took away a bit from the photos. Still, the local music and food made up for it. Would love to return during a festival next time.
