About Dahab, Egypt

4.4 (20 reviews)
Dahab, Egypt is a relaxed Red Sea town that has transformed from a humble Bedouin fishing village into a magnet for travelers seeking sunshine, underwater magic, and a tranquil ambiance. It's a place where the dramatic Sinai Mountains tumble into dazzling turquoise waters, drawing free spirits, divers, and backpackers from around the world. What sets Dahab apart is its chilled-out vibe—here, shoes are often optional, and days start slow, filled with gentle sea breezes and the scent of sweet shisha in the air.

The town is world-renowned for its diving and snorkeling, especially at sites like the Blue Hole and the Lighthouse Reef, where vibrant coral gardens teem with marine life. Adventure-seekers will also find windsurfing, kite surfing, desert safaris, and camel treks into the mountains. The palm-lined promenade, known as the Corniche, is dotted with cafes, artisan shops, and casual seaside restaurants where you can enjoy fresh seafood with your toes in the sand. For those interested in local culture, guided visits to Bedouin camps and star-gazing excursions in the desert offer insight into the traditions of the Sinai Peninsula.

Dahab’s atmosphere is welcoming and laid-back, making it an easy place to linger. The town’s artsy expat community blends with local Bedouins and Egyptian families, creating a multicultural scene that’s both vibrant and unpretentious. There’s almost always live music or a film night happening somewhere, and travelers often find themselves making friends over shared meals or sunset beach gatherings. Early morning yoga classes on the beach are almost as popular as the evening campfires under a blanket of stars.

Accommodations range from low-cost hostels and cozy guesthouses to boutique eco-lodges and comfortable hotels along the sea. Getting around is uncomplicated; most places are walkable or an easy cycle, with tuk-tuks and taxis available for longer trips. Food is a highlight in Dahab—you’ll find everything from savoury Egyptian mezze to fresh seafood, international vegan options, and wood-fired pizzas all along the waterfront. Free WiFi is common in restaurants and hotels, making it easy for digital nomads or those who want to keep in touch while savoring the laid-back surroundings.

The best time to visit Dahab is between March and June or September and November, when the weather is warm but not stifling and the winds are ideal for water sports. Summer can be hot but remains bearable by the shore, while winters are mild and perfect for diving. Bring a light jacket for cooler desert nights, and don’t forget water shoes for rocky beach areas. Dahab invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and experience Sinai at your own pace.

General Advice

Dahab is a welcoming destination where visitors can slow down and connect with both nature and people. It's best to plan a mix of activities—some days spent diving or exploring the desert, and others just relaxing along the water. English is widely understood in town, and most businesses accept both Egyptian pounds and euros or US dollars, though it's smart to carry small notes for taxis and local shops. Dress casually but respectfully, especially when venturing into local markets or Bedouin areas, and always stay hydrated under the Sinai sun.

Security & Safety

Dahab is generally considered safe for tourists, with a low rate of petty crime, but common sense applies: keep valuables secure, avoid isolated areas at night, and use registered guides for desert or mountain trips. The Red Sea can have strong currents at some dive sites, so only snorkel or dive within your skill level and follow local operator advice. It’s a good idea to register your presence with your embassy and check travel advisories before heading into remote regions of Sinai. Women travelers will generally feel comfortable, but modest dress is recommended away from the beach.

Travel Tips

  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect fragile marine life.
  • ATM access is good, but some cafes and markets are cash-only.
  • Tipping ('baksheesh') is customary for good service.
  • Pack water shoes for swimming and rocky beaches.
  • Negotiate prices in local shops and markets.
  • WiFi is available in most hotels and cafes, but may be slow during peak hours.
  • Dahab tap water is not potable—stick to bottled or filtered water.
  • Plan ahead if visiting for diving certifications; courses can get booked up in high season.

My partner and I spent five days in Dahab and wish we could’ve stayed longer. The pace of life here is so relaxed—nothing like the busier Egyptian cities. We especially loved our evening walks down the Corniche and snorkeling right off the main beach. The only minor downside is the patchy WiFi in some guesthouses, but it was also kind of nice to unplug.

Dahab is a diver’s paradise. I dove the Blue Hole and Three Pools—saw a moray eel and more colorful fish than I could count. The dive shops were professional and the prices were very reasonable. Food at the beach restaurants was so fresh. Overall, an incredible spot for adventure and relaxation.

We came as a family with two young kids and felt very safe walking around. Our children loved the lagoon area, and we did a camel ride into the desert at sunset which they still talk about. Some of the roads are a bit rough for strollers, but everyone was very friendly and helpful. Great choice for families wanting something more genuine and peaceful.

Dahab feels like a real escape from the world. The yoga classes on the beach were the perfect way to start the day, and the evenings were all about simple food and great conversation with travelers from everywhere. My only regret is that the wind wasn’t strong enough for my planned kitesurfing lessons a couple of days. Still, I’d come back in a heartbeat.

Best snorkeling I’ve ever done, hands down. The Lighthouse area is stunning, and you can just swim out from shore. Really loved the laid-back vegetarian cafes on the promenade. I met so many friendly people, both locals and fellow travelers. It’s easy to fall into the Dahab rhythm.

The scenery here is spectacular, with mountains meeting the sea in such a unique way. Desert safaris were a highlight for me—watching the stars after a Bedouin dinner felt magical. It does get pretty hot in summer, though there’s always a breeze near the water. I’d suggest coming in spring or fall if you can.

The vibe in Dahab is awesome, super relaxed and welcoming. I’m not a diver, so I spent most of my time just relaxing and reading on the beach. Some beaches are rocky, so bring proper shoes. Shopping on the Corniche was fun but prices were a bit inflated for tourists.

The blue water and mountain views are fantastic for photography. I did a day trip to Mt. Sinai and St. Catherine’s—totally worth it, though the hike is tough. Don’t miss Eel Garden for snorkeling! Dahab isn’t fancy, but it’s full of character and heart.

Came for diving certification and left with a lot of wonderful memories. The dive instructors were experienced and patient throughout the course. I also enjoyed the Bedouin dinner in the desert, which felt very special. There’s a fun, open-minded community vibe here that’s hard to find elsewhere.

I liked how you could get almost everywhere by foot and never felt rushed. Seafood was fresh, especially the grilled fish at local beach shacks. EMS services are a little basic, so take care during activities. Would definitely recommend Dahab for a laid-back, affordable getaway.

As a solo female traveler I felt very comfortable in Dahab, both by day and evening. Everyone was chill and helpful, and I made friends over coffee and shisha. Sunsets by the Lagoon are unreal. Some places only took cash, so it’s good to be prepared.

Great place to unplug and reconnect with nature. I joined a desert jeep tour, which included sandboarding and a night under the stars. Diving is fantastic, but there’s plenty to enjoy even if you just want to relax. Fell in love with the slow way of life here.

Perfect spot for yogis. Studios are right by the sea and teachers are great. Nightlife is mellow—think acoustic music and beach bonfires rather than big clubs, which suited me well. There were a few power cuts during the week, but they didn’t last long.

Had a great week scuba diving and chilling in Dahab. The local food, especially the falafel and grilled veggies, was delicious. Some roads are a little rough and dusty, so pack sensible shoes or sandals. Will definitely be back for the underwater adventures.

We celebrated our anniversary here and it was so peaceful—just us, the sound of the sea, and candlelit dinners. Did a short trek in the mountains at sunset, which was spectacular. Would’ve appreciated a few more upscale dining choices, but the casual spots had charm.

Dahab is paradise if you love the sea. I took windsurfing lessons and spent the afternoons exploring local coffee shops. Met travelers from all over, and it functions like a little community. Super easy to extend your stay if you fall in love with the pace.

The view of the Sinai mountains meeting the Red Sea is something I’ll never forget. Our guide explained Bedouin traditions and even taught us how to make Bedouin tea. The vibe is low-key. My only qualm was the lack of public transport options, but taxis are cheap.

The diving is world class and there’s a surprising range of accommodations. I appreciated the eco-conscious touches at our hotel. A few of the sites do get crowded during peak season, so plan to start your dives early. Overall, loved the atmosphere and scenery.

My friends and I traveled as a group and split our time between yoga, snorkeling, and just hanging out in the local cafes. The market is fun for picking up crafts and souvenirs. Wish there were more shaded beach spots, but it wasn’t a big issue. Highly recommend for chilled group trips.

Dahab feels authentic and different from the big resorts. Friendly people, great views, and plenty to do for active travelers. The town is small, so you can really get to know your favorite places. A couple of beach areas are rocky, so bring sturdy sandals.
